2008 Aaron’s 499 Preview and Predictions
April 23, 2008
NASCAR fans are gearing up for the big race at Talladega Speedway this weekend. After a week off, drivers and fans are geared up for what many believe to be the most exciting race of the year, behind the Daytona 500. The Aaron’s 499 is set to take place Sunday April 27th, and is the first of two events held at Talladega during the Sprint Cup Series. The Aaron’s 499 is one of 4 races during the year that are run with restrictor plates. On a side note for those who don’t know the race is still slightly over 500 miles even though the name implies it might only be 499 miles. If you take a look back the history of the Aaron’s 499, you see a long streak of wins by the current Hendricks Motorsports team. Jeff Gordon won last year and has won 3 of the last 4, only to be interrupted by teammate Jimmie Johnson back in 2006. Before that new teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the previous two races back in 2002 and 2003. So with the team officially on the board with Jimmie Johnson taking home his first victory of the season at the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Here is a look at two drivers we see doing some real damage this weekend when the race at Talladega gets underway.
#88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 4-1 odds at Sportsbook.com
Earnhardt Jr. has been pretty impressive this year even without a victory on the Sprint Cup Series. He is currently sitting in 3rd place in the point standings, so without winning he must be doing something right. When you start looking back at the season so far its not hard to see why he is so far up in the point standings. He has only finished outside of the top 10 in two races this season, and stayed hot last week with a 7th place finish at the Subway Fresh Fit 500. We have already mentioned Earnhardt Jr.’s success here at Talladega, and it wasn’t any different for his dad Dale Earnhardt who won this event 3 times during the 1990’s. Coming in as the oddsmakers favorite this weekend we don’t see any reason not to take this guy, it should be another good week for Hendricks Motorsports.
#20 Tony Stewart 6-1 odds at Sportsbook.com
Stewart always seems to be a threat whenever he starts a race at Talladega, as he has a total of six 2nd place finishes and 11 top ten finishes at the two races run at Talladega during the season. So it’s only a matter of time before things go this guy’s way here, and he is able to take home the checkered flag and finally make his way to victory lane. Stewart is another one of those big names that have yet to get a victory in 2008. Like Earnhardt Jr. he has still been able to put together a pretty solid season, as he currently comes in tied for 6th in the point standings with Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin. Stewart’s most impressive showing this season have game at the Daytona 500 where he finished 3rd and at the Kobalt Tools 500 where he was the runner-up. One of these two guys should win this weekend, so if you don’t like Earnhardt Jr. then Stewart is your man.
