2008 ACC Basketball Predictions, Picks & Season Preview

Written October 6, 2008 by Jack Jones

The ACC is going to be one of the top conferences in all of college basketball once again in 2008-09. They have the best team in the nation with North Carolina, and are deep with a bunch of others that have a real shot at making the tournament at the end of the year. Let’s take a look at how we see the final standings playing out:

1. North Carolina - This is the pretty obvious choice since they return Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, and Danny Green. All four of those guys were thinking about putting their name up for the NBA draft but decided to come back and make a go for the national title. It would be surprising if they don’t get it. Read our entire North Carolina basketball predictions article for more on the team.

2. Duke - The Blue Devils will go under the radar for the first time in a long while since the Tar Heels are going to be the media darlings. They return a solid core of players, mostly in the backcourt. If they have someone step up down low and take the pressure off of Kyle Singler then they could contend for the conference crown. 3. Miami - Kind of the surprise team here, but the Hurricanes are not just a football school any more. They return four starters from a team that went to the second round of the tournament a year ago, but won’t sneak up on anyone like they did a year ago. Read more in our Miami basketball predictions article.

4. Wake Forest - With everyone coming back again this year, we expect this team to finish in the top half of the division. They added the best recruiting class in the conference to an already deep lineup that has all-conference talents James Johnson and Jeff Teague. 5. Virginia Tech - The Hokies return enough key pieces that we see them landing in the NCAA tournament. They are still young and are probably a year off from contending for the conference title, but don’t count them out this year. Read our Virginia Tech basketball predictions article for more on the Hokies.

6. Clemson - Last year’s team overachieved in going 10-6, and they lost some key players. While we don’t see them fading to the back of the pack, we do see them in the middle of the conference. For more on the Tigers read our Clemson basketball predictions.

7. Maryland - Gary Williams seems to have dropped off the map since winning his national title in 2002. This doesn’t seem to be the year that his Terps get back on track. Read more in our Maryland basketball predictions article.

8. Georgia Tech - The Yellow Jackets have failed to impress since losing to UConn in the national title game in 2004. The team also isn’t very deep, and any injuries at all could derail their season. For more read our Georgia Tech basketball predictions article.

9. NC State - Wolfpack fans are hoping Ben McCauley and Brandon Costner can get back to 2006-07 form after a disappointing year last year. While they should be better than a year ago, they won’t be a whole lot better. Get more info in our NC State basketball predictions article.

10. Boston College - Tyrese Rice is one of the best guards in the league, if not the country. The problem is that he doesn’t have any help around him. Find out the details in our Boston College basketball predictions article.

11. Florida State - It’s been a long time since the Seminoles made the NCAA tournament, and with only a couple known producers it is a stretch to see them pulling it off this year. See what else we think about the Seminoles in our Florida State basketball predictions article.

12. Virginia - Without Sean Singletary we don’t see this team winning many games in the league. See what else we think in our Virginia basketball predictions article.
