2008 ACC Conference Tournament Preview and Predictions
Conference tournaments are just a week away and the NCAA Tournament is almost here. While we have a good idea of who is going to make it and who isn’t there is still a lot that is up for grabs. Lets take a look at the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Tournament that is set to take place March 13-16. The tournament is set to take place at the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats Arena. The ACC is composed of 12 teams, and the tournament rewards the top 4 regular season teams a bye on opening day of the tournament. While top two spots are locked between Duke and North Carolina, there are still 4 teams fighting for the bye. The ACC features two of the best teams in the country in North Carolina and the Duke Blue Devils. Both a sure lock for the NCAA tournament will be fighting all the way to the finish to try and secure a #1 seed. While those to sit tied a top the conference, there are still a few other teams that have a good shot at making the tournament. We think that both Miami (Fla.) and Clemson are locks to get in, but both Virginia Tech and Maryland will need strong finishes if they want an invite to the big dance. Virginia Tech has a great chance to build their resume with their final regular season game at Clemson. Maryland on the other hand will not only need a win at Virginia before the conference tournament, they will have to have a good run in the tournament to keep their hopes alive. Here is a look at who we think is going to win the tournament and who we think will help themselves with a good performance.
Winner: North Carolina
The Tar Heels seemed to have a fire lit under them after losing to Duke at home. They have rolled off 7 straight victories since that game, and have moved to #1 in both the AP and coaches polls. While they have been riding the play of Junior Tyler Hansbrough’s 23 PPG and 10 RPG, they got their star point guard Ty Lawson back from injury. While Lawson has yet to get back into the starting lineup he should be getting closer and closer to full strength come tournament time. The Tar Heels should pay back Duke for the earlier loss in the final game, and be primed to roll through the conference tournament and on the #1 seed overall in the NCAA Tournament.
Moving Up: Maryland
We are going to pick the team that has the most at stake in this tournament. Maryland looked like a for sure team getting an at-large bid has moved to must win status. The Terps seemed to have Clemson down for the count before they blew a 20-point lead to lose by 3. Maryland has plenty of talent its just a matter if they decide to come and play. Their biggest and most surprising win of the season came in an upset win at North Carolina. The team is going to rely heavily on the tandem of leading scorers Greivis Vasquez 17.5 PPG and James Gist 16 PPG.
