2008 Army Black Knights
Written July 17, 2008 by Jason Lowry
We are fast approaching another fun and exciting NCAA football season, and Jason Lowry is here to bring you his 2008 Army Black Knights football predictions. The Black Knights are coming off another bad season, as they went 3-9 in Stan Brock’s first run as head coach. The team was 3-3 at the halfway point of the season, but finished off the season with 6 straight losses and not 1 was closer than 10 points. Things don’t look too bright in 2008, as they Black Knights only bring back 8 starters, which is hard for any team to overcome. To get a good idea at just how good the Black Knights will be, here is a quick look at who they will be sending out as starters on both sides of the ball.
Offense:
With only 4 guys back on this side of the ball its going to be tough for this team to go out there and move the ball on a lot of teams. If freshman Paul McIntosh can step in and play solid at the quarterback position then things will get a little easier on this unit. It looks like the team will again go with shared duty at the running back position in sophomore Pat mealy and senior Tony Dace. The team will have all new faces in the starting lineup at the wide receiver and tight end spots, in juniors Damion Hunter and Mike Evans along with senior Mike Wright, who is the only guy in this group to haul in a touchdown last season. It will help that two of the starters coming back are on the offensive line, as it will be the key in this team improving. it looks like senior Tyson Quink will take over at center, sophomore Mikel Weich at right guard, and junior Jason Johnson at left tackle.
Defense:
The Black Knights only bring back 4 starters on this side of the ball as well, meaning it could be a really long season if they can’t stop anyone from scoring. Last season they gave up over 30 points per game and will need to bring that number down if they want to win more games. They do bring back 2 starters on the defensive line in juniors Ted Bentler and Victor Ugenyi. It looks like fellow juniors Mike Gann and Nicholas Emmons will join forces in the starting lineup. The rest of the starters coming back are at the linebacker positions in seniors John Plumstead and Frank Scappaticci, while sophomore Joshua McNary is slated to be the new starting weak side linebacker. The secondary sees all new faces in the starting lineup, as senior Josh Mitchell and sophomore Jordan Trimble are thew likely duo at corner, while seniors David Black and Markenson Pierre are the guys at the safety spot.
Prediction: 3rd in Independent division
Sorry Black Knight fans, but this season isn’t looking pretty and it hasn’t even started. Hardly any team can expect to bring back 8 starters and put together a winning season. We are thinking that if this team can go 3-9 again this season it would be a successful one.
