2008 Arnold Palmer Invitational
The PGA Tour is getting ready to hit the 3rd event in Florida this week at the legendary Bay Hill Club and Lounge in Orlando, Florida. The tournament is named after one of the greatest golfers to ever step foot on the golf course. Arnold Palmer paved the way for many of the golfers today, and there is no better way to acknowledge him than have a weekend dedicated to the man himself. Last year the trophy went to Vijay Singh who was finally able to get a victory at Bay Hill, after trying since he was first invited back in 1993. The tournament is set to start on Thursday March 13th and conclude on Sunday March 16th. The tournament started back in 1966 and seems to be one of the most popular events of the year. In what should be a good week for golf, we also are expecting some of the best golfers in the world to show up.
While we won’t have all three top golfers in play this week, fans will be excited to see Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson back in action after some time off. Ernie Els was expected to play this week but withdrew due to fatigue from playing the last couple weeks. Fans will be anxious to watch Tiger and see if he can continue his streak and domination of the golf world. Phil will come ready to and show everyone that Tiger isn’t that far above everyone. In what should be a good tune up to the Masters that is fast approaching, look for one of the top dogs to come out on top in 2008. Lets take a look at three golfers we like this week, including a favorite, middle of the pack, and a long shot.
Favorite: Tiger Woods 10-11 at BetUS
There is no question Tiger is the favorite coming in this week at Bay Hill. Tiger is simply playing at a level where it will be hard for anyone to compete with him. He will be looking for his 5th straight tour win and his 8th out of his last 9 events dating back to 2007. Tiger has a little extra incentive this weekend, as he is only one win away from being tied with Ben Hogan on the all-time career win list. It will mark his 64th career win and continue him on the path to becoming the best ever. Tiger won his most recent event at the Accenture Match Play Championship back in February. One thing to watch out for is Tiger struggled here last year finishing tied for 22nd, but we believe he will return to the form that led him to 4 straight wins at Bay Hill from 2000-2003.
Middle of the Pack: Luke Donald 20-1 at BetUS
Luke Donald is coming with 2 top 3 finishes in just 3 events this year. He finished 2nd at the Honda Classic and finished tied for 3rd at the Northern Trust Open. Luke played well at Bay Hill last year finishing in 8th place just 6 shots behind the winner. While it will be hard for Donald to pull of the upset of Tiger and Phil he could easily add another top 5 finish this week. The reason we really like Donald is that he is currently 3rd in putting and 2nd in scoring average. So don’t be surprised to see Donald in contention on Sunday.
Long Shot: Chad Campbell 60-1 at BetUS
We actually like this play on Campbell with the odds he is getting this week. While his 2008 numbers might not be all that impressive he has made the cut in all but one event and has a top 10 finish. Campbell knows what it takes to win at Bay Hill, as he walked off the 18th green in 2004 as the winner of the event. What will help Campbell this week is that he in the top 20 in both greens in regulation (18th) and birdies (12).
