2008 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am
Written February 5, 2008 by Jack Jones
Pebble Beach, California is getting ready for one of the biggest fields of the year when golfers and celebrities participate in the multi-course event. Golfers will tee off from Pebble Beach Golf Links, Poppy Hills, and Spyglass Hill GC. This type of tournament is not something of regularity on the PGA Tour; only 3 other tournaments use multiple courses. The other 3 are the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Buick Invitational, and the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. These types of events are hard for players to prepare for. It is hard to get a feel for all three courses in just a few days. Those who have been on tour and played these courses before, definitely have a better chance of playing well this weekend. Though it should be noted that we could see a lot of low scores, because of the rain-softened courses. One player missing in action this week is Tiger Woods. With Woods not playing it allows many golfers a better chance of winning. Lets take a look at 3 golfers who we feel will perform well this week, a favorite, a middle of the pack, and a long shot.
Favorite: Phil Mickelson 9-2
Mickelson is no stranger to the multi-course tournament format. In fact he has the most wins at these kinds of events with 12. Tiger is close behind with 11, but there will be no Tiger this weekend. Phil is also the defending champion, and overall winner of this tournament 3 times. Mickelson has been playing pretty well to start the season finishing in the top ten in both events played. He finished second last week at the FBR Open, losing in a playoff to JB Holmes. While Mickelson’s putting has troubled him so far this year, we love his ability to scramble and make incredible shots around the green. This week Mickelson will win a tight one and secure his first victory of the year.
Middle of the Pack: Padraig Harrington 20-1
We feel that Harrington is one of the best-kept secrets in golf. He spends a lot of time on the European Tour so you don’t hear as much about him. Making his first start of the season on the PGA Tour, last years British Open Champion is ready to make a run at courses in the U.S. He has also played well at this event before; he finished last year tied for 10th.
Long Shot: David Love III 40-1
Love III, is another player starting off his 2008 season this week. Love III is also one of the few golfers who have had success playing in multi-course events. This will mark the first tournament Love III will compete in since he had ankle surgery back in September. While later in the season Love III will not be a long shot in many events, makes him a decent pick to come out and surprise everyone with a good showing this week. While a victory will be tough for Love III, it will all come down to just how good of shape he is coming into this event. With the courses likely to be playing easy all weekend, anyone has a chance to compete this week. This will help Love III a lot; it would be much harder to start the season in tough conditions.
