2008 Big 12 Conference Tournament Preview and Predictions
The Big 12 tournament is set to take place March 13-16 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO. This is the first year the tournament will play in the Sprint Center that opened back in the fall of 2007. The tournament will include each team in the Big 12, with the top 4 teams after regular season play getting a first round bye, meaning if the bottom 8 want to win the tournament they will have to win 4 games in 4 days. The top 2 seeds are set with Texas likely to get the #1 seed and Kansas to get the #2. Both teams are tied in conference play, but Texas holds the edge with a win in the regular season match up. Kansas St. is 9-6 and holds the 3 spot with one game remaining, but a lot could change as there are 3 teams sitting at 8-7 right behind them. The Big 12 has no doubt that highly ranked Texas and Kansas will be in the tournament. While Oklahoma, Kansas St. Baylor, Texas A&M are fighting for at-large bids to the tournament. We wouldn’t be surprised if all 4 of these teams make it, as the Big 12 has been considered one of the toughest conferences in college basketball. We believe besides the top two that Kansas St. and Oklahoma are in for sure. While Texas A&M and Baylor are looking good they can’t afford to slip up against a weaker opponent. Texas Tech might have an outside shot if it can finish up with a win against Baylor and a really good showing in the Big 12 Tournament. So with that said lets take a look at who we think is going to win the tournament and who has a chance to move up with a good performance this weekend.
Winner: Kansas Jayhawks
While Texas will likely finish ahead of them and hold the edge in the regular season match up, Kansas has seemed to gain back that edge that had them locks to win the conference before their loss to Texas and slip up at Oklahoma St. After losing 2 of 3 they have won 3 in a row by a combined unbelievable 83 points. The most impressive win coming in their most recent game against Texas Tech, where they won by 58 at home. The same Texas Tech team that beat Texas just a game earlier. Kansas is currently ranked #5 with a 27-3 overall record, and will be fighting with the other premier teams for the coveted #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Big Mover: Baylor Bears
The Baylor Bears had a pretty impressive non-conference with a win at Notre Dame. While the Big 12 has been an up and down battle for the Bears this year they have been in almost every game. Their biggest win has came against Kansas St, but they played Kansas to a 10 point game at their place and gave Texas a scare with a 5 point loss at home. They will be relying heavily on the play of Junior Curtis Jerrells who has a team leading 15 PPG and 3.7 APG. While we aren’t predicting the Bears to win the tournament, we think they can win 2 or 3 games to secure them a spot in the big dance
