2008 Boston College Basketball Predictions & Season Preview
Written September 30, 2008 by Jack Jones

Last year Boston College had one of the youngest clubs in the ACC and it showed. The team went through several ups and downs as evidenced by their 14-17 record overall and their 4-12 mark in the conference. Head coach Al Skinner is hoping his team can build on last year’s experiences and make strides for 2008-09. The team is still fairly young with mostly sophomores, but Skinner is hoping that leading scorer senior Tyrese Rice can step up to be the team leader. The odds makers at BetUS have listed Boston College at +10,000 to win the NCAA tournament. This means that if you bet $100 you could win $10,000 if they cut down the nets in April.
The Eagles frontcourt will seem kind of bare with the departure of their three main players from a year ago. Senior centers Tyrelle Blair and John Oates graduated, and forward Shamari Spears transferred. Skinner doesn’t seem to be too worried about his situation though, as he does have Josh Southern to fill in at center after averaging 5.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game as a freshman. There is also depth, with sophomore Corey Raji and Joe Trapani, who had to sit out last season after transferring to BC from Vermont. Tyler Roche also returns after starting 23 contests a year ago, plus there is Cortney Dunn and Evan Ravenel to eat up minutes.

Most of the scoring last year came from the backcourt, with Rice averaging 21 ppg and off-guard Rakim Sanders putting up 11.3 ppg. While that trend will most likely continue in 2008, Skinner would like to see more people get involved. If both guards score fewer points, have more assists, and shoot a higher percentage then this team is probably going to win more games.
Final Analyis
This group should be improved over last year’s bunch, but how much is still to be determined. Sure they return a lot of letterwinners, but this group is still pretty young and inexperienced. Boston College missed the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time in four years, and we just don’t see them improving enough to get over the hump and get in the dance this year. We see the Eagles ending up near the bottom of the tough league in our ACC basketball predictions.
