2008 British Open

July 7, 2008

Even though there is still another week of action on the PGA Tour before golfs best head to the UK for the 2008 British Open, Jason Lowry is ready to make his predictions for the 3rd major of the season that is set to start on July 15th at Royal Birkdale. While its going to be hard for many fans to get into the action without Tiger Woods in the field for the first time at a major since 1996. This should take a lot of pressure off the field, and allow them to play with a little more ease knowing that Tiger is roaring his way to yet another win, or that he is sitting right behind them ready to make his move. While when it comes to majors many golfers will tell you its not about how much money you win, but more about winning the event, but the purse of over $8, 637,000 it might be hard for some players to get the numbers out of their head. Either way this should be a fun tournament to watch and it will be interesting to see how the players react to playing in a major without arguably the best player in the world in action. To help get thins going here is our take on 3 golfers throughout the field that we think have a great shot at winning the tournament.

Favorite: Sergio Garcia - 8/1 at Sportsbook.com
We are big fans of Garcia and we really feel that if this guy can just get that first major under his belt, there will be more to come. He had it all but locked up last year at Carnoustie, but after a Sunday collapse it had to have him second guessing if he would ever be able to win a major. Garcia has played well of late that includes a win at the Players Championship, and we feel like this is going to be his weekend to shine and hold up the Claret Jug.

Middle of the Pack: Adam Scott - 25/1 at Sportsbook.com
Even though Scott’s best finish at the British Open is only an 8th place finish back in 2006, we got a really good feeling that this guy is going to surprise a lot of people this weekend and be right in the middle of things when the final round rolls around. Scott has won this season at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship and its only a matter of time before this 27 year old breaks out.

Long Shot: Hunter Mahan - 45/1 at Sportsbook.com
Since finishing tied for 18th at the US Open this year Mahan has put together two more quality starts including a tie for 2nd at the Travelers Championship. Plus Mahan is coming off his best performance of his career at the British Open with a tie for 6th place last year. Mahan is 15th in total driving and 2nd in greens in regulation, which means if he can get his putter going than he just might win the whole thing this weekend.
