The Browns were disappointed with their 10-6 showing last year largely because they still missed out on the playoffs due to losing the tie-breaker. The team is hopeful due to an explosion on the offensive side of the ball, led by quarterback Derek Anderson, wide receiver Braylon Edwards, and tight end Kellen Winslow. Anderson was the biggest surprise since Charlie Frye was supposed to be the started and Brady Quinn was drafted as the future under center. However, he overcame the long odds to throw 29 touchdown passes, showing that he can lead this team downfield with his strong arm and fearless personality.
This year Anderson should be able to improve his numbers since the Browns added another weapon in Donte Stallworth, who makes the move to Cleveland from the New England Patriots. Stallworth can streak downfield, which should open things up for Edwards much the same way he did for Randy Moss a season ago. Pair those two up with Joe Jurevicius and you have quite the trio. If Jamal Lewis can repeat his dominant season from a year ago, this offense will move the ball effectively.
Defense is an area that the Browns needed to improve upon, and they did their best by adding Shaun Rogers from Detroit and Corey Williams from Green Bay. The problems could come from a shaky secondary, but if they play surprisingly well, this defense could be a tough one to rack the yards up against.
The Steelers might have the better team on papaer, but it’s not tough to see why there are a lot of pundits out there who think Cleveland can break through in 2008. The offense has the weapons and the defense got an upgrade. This team is still young and hungry. The fans finally have something to root for and if you add all of this up, we see the Browns having a good shot at taking the division this year.
