2008 Cleveland Browns

Written August 10, 2008 by Jason Lowry

With another NFL season fast approaching Jason Lowry is ready to bring you his 2008 Cleveland Browns season predictions. The Browns had one of the most surprising seasons of any team in the NFL. The Browns shocked everyone going 10-6 and giving some of the best teams in the league all they could handle. The one down point to this great season, was it wasn’t good enough to make the playoffs, as they finished tied with the Steelers for first in the AFC North, but since they failed to beat them during the season they lost the tie breaker. This year the Browns are being considered possibly the best team in the division, and could be staring their first playoff appearance in years. Lets see just what the Browns will look like this upcoming season.

Offense:
There is no question that the Browns are going to be able to put up plenty of high scoring games this season, with tons of talent all over the field, but there are some questions surrounding whether Pro Bowler Derek Anderson will lose his starting job to the young Brady Quinn. Whoever winds up at quarterback should have no problem finding someone to either give the ball to or throw it to, as Jamal Lewis seems to have resurrected his career with the Browns, and the combination of Braylon Edwards, Donte’ Stallworth, and Kellen Winslow is tough to beat. But what really gets the whole offense going, is the all the sudden very solid line that is now anchored by one of the best rookies of last year in left tackle Joe Thomas. If the line plays as well in 2008, this unit could be really good.

Defense:
The one thing that can keep this team out of the playoffs again this season, is the fact that their defense really had trouble stopping anyone last season, but they did show some improvement towards the end of the season. If this unit can improve just slightly this team becomes even more of a threat. The defensive line looks like it could be much improved with the additions of tackle Shaun Rodgers and end Corey Williams. At linebacker questions still rise on whether this team has a pass-rushing threat they have needed. Kamerion Wimberly continues to impress, and should get one more season of playing along side the old vet Willie McGinest. The secondary isn’t the best but it does have some solid young talent in 2nd year corners Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright. Safety Brodney Pool is being asked to lead this unit in just his 2nd year as a starter.

Special Teams:
The Browns pick things back up in this unit, as they have one of the most underrated kickers in the game in Phil Dawson, and one of the most electric returners in the game in Josh Cribbs, who set records last season thanks to all the points the defense let up. Cribbs hopes that if the defense improves he will be able to showcase his punt return skills this season. At punter the Browns are pretty average with Dave Zastudi, who needs to show he is full strength this season.
