2008 Coca Cola 600 Preview & Prediction

Written May 20, 2008 by Jack Jones

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers wont have to go far this week as this will be the 2nd race in a row at Lowe’s Motor Speedway as fans gear up to watch the Coca Cola 600 on Saturday May 24th. This week drivers will have to be well prepared as the 600 mile race is the longest of the season, and in fact it’s the longest race on any oval track in the world. Last week at this very same track for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race Kasey Kahne was able to win, but because the event isn’t a Series Cup race he wasn’t able to get any points. He did take home a huge paycheck and some much need motivation heading into the rest of the season. Last year Casey Mears was the winner of the Coca Cola 600 as he was finally able to put a stop to Jimmie Johnson, who had won 3 in a row here. Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton are two other drivers with multiple wins on this track that are scheduled to be in the field this weekend. Here is a look at two drivers we feel will perform well at this Saturday night racing event.

#99 Carl Edwards 9/2 odds at Sportsbook.com

Edwards is coming off a 10th place finish last week at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race and is a big favorite to do well this weekend. Edwards had a 3rd place finish at this event back in 2006 and 2005, and is always a good pick to do well each and every week. Last season he took a minor step back and finished 15th here, but the way this guy is running this year it makes him a real threat to be the first guy across the finish line. With 3 first place finishes already on the season and a 2nd place finish just a couple weeks ago we really like this guy and think he will be right there on the final lap.

#9 Kasey Kahne 30/1 odds at Sportsbook.com

After a great finish last week and taking home a big victory, we feel like its only a matter of time till this guy gets his first series win of the year. At odds like these this guy is worth the risk, and on top of that he is no stranger to this track as he 2 career victories at Lowe’s Motor Speedway including this event back in 2006. Kahne started the season 4 top 10 finishes in his first 5 races, but had struggled getting back there until his big win last week. Kahne is part of Gillett Evernham Motorsports racing team and would really make some noise this week with a win here at the Coca Cola 600. So if you don’t want to shell out the big bucks in order to cash in with a favorite, take these odds and cash in big with a small bet this weekend.
