2008 Connecticut Huskies

Written July 15, 2008 by Jason Lowry

To get you going on the upcoming football season Jason Lowry is ready to make his 2008 Connecticut Huskies football predictions. The Huskies are coming off a very solid season going 9-4 overall and finished tied with West Virginia for 1st in the Big East with a 5-2 conference record, but their huge loss at West Virginia put them behind the Mountaineers in the standings. This season Randy Edsall will enter his 10th season as head coach, and should have quite the team with 17 returning starters coming back. The Huskies have plenty of talent all over the field, and here is a look at what they will be lining up on both sides of the ball in 2008.

Offense:
The offense brings back 9 starters this season, and we think the team can improve on its numbers from a year ago. The offense will likely be in the hands of senior quarterback Tyler Lorenzen who threw for over 2,300 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago. Don’t be surprised to see Notre Dame transfer Zach Frazer to step in if Lorenzen has any trouble this season. The team brings back 2 studs at running back in juniors Andre Dixon and Donald Brown, both rushed for over 800 yards last season and combined for 11 touchdowns. So while the majority of the offense comes on the ground the team does have some talent at wide receiver in returning starters junior Brad Kanuch and senior DJ Hernandez, and they also have one of the best tight ends in the Big East in senior Steve Brouse. The offensive line is definitely a strength for this unit as they return 4 starters, all of whom are above average players. The team will be counting on freshman Jimmy Bennett to take over the starting spot at right guard.

Defense:
The defense also has plenty of talent, as 8 starters come back this season. The Huskies gave up the 2nd most yards in the conference, but somehow managed to allow the 2nd fewest points. The will need to improve on the yardage, and we think this unit will do just that. The defensive line brings back all but one starter, and they plan on plugging redshirt freshman Jarrell Miller in at the open tackle spot. Miller should be able to do just fine playing along side solid defensive ends in seniors Julius Williams and Cody Brown. The Huskies also bring back all 3 starters at linebacker including the young and talented sophomore duo of Scott Lutrus and Lawrence Wilson. This team will likely be the weakest in the secondary, as they only bring back 2 starters in senior Darius Butler at one of the corner spots and junior Robert Vaughn at free safety, both are some of the best the Big East has to offer at their positions. It looks like junior Robert McClain III will be the other starting corner, while redshirt freshman Jonathan Jean-Louis takes over at the strong safety spot.

Prediction: 5th in the Big East
The Huskies are not as bad as it might look getting picked to finish 5th in the Big East, as they are likely a team that can put together another 8-9 win season. The Huskies will need to take care of tough games at home against West Virginia and Pitt, but a big game for their overall season comes on Oct. 4 at North Carolina.
