2008 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial

Written May 20, 2008 by Jack Jones

After almost every big name in golf took last week off at the AT&T Classic some of the big names including Phil Mickelson will be back in action this week when the PGA TOUR heads to FT. Worth, Texas for the 2008 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial golf and country club. Also in the field is defending champion Rory Sabbatini, who try and be the second golfer to win this tournament in back-to-back years. The only player to do so is Ben Hogan in 1952-53 and the two very first tournaments here in 1946-47. So with over 60 years of action it’s easy to see why there are some big names that come to play. Last week fans were able to see Ryuji Imada win his first PGA TOUR tournament, and reminds us that any week can be someone’s week to put their name in the record books. Lets take a look at 3 golfers who we feel have a great shot at being in contention on come Sunday afternoon.

Favorite: Phil Mickelson 10-1 at Sportsbook.com

Mickelson is definitely one of the better golfers of this era and with a field without the name of Tiger Woods in it, it is usually a safe bet to pick Mickelson as a guy who will perform well and have a great chance of being in contention. Since his 5th place finish at the Masters Mickelson has struggled with a 12th and 21st finish in his last two tournaments. Back in action after a week off we feel that this guy will be ready to go and have another good outing here at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Mickelson won this tournament back in 2000 and would love nothing more than adding another win to his career total this week.

Next In Line: Kenny Perry 20-1 at Sportsbook.com

Last week Perry seemed to have the tournament won, but after putting one in the water it allowed Imada to steal the show and left Perry with a sick feeling in his stomach. Perry is likely going to come back even more focused this week and he should be grinning from ear to ear because he has played some of his better golf here at Colonial golf course. Perry has two wins here with the first coming in 2003 and then a couple years later in 2005. Perry is playing some great golf and at 20-1 odds it’s a pretty good bet for any betters looking for a middle of the pack type of pick this weekend.

Long Shot: Pat Perez 60-1 at Sportsbook.com

Perez has been up and down throughout the year, and this could be the tournament that he cracks the top 3 and maybe even sneak in his first PGA TOUR win as Imada did last week. Perez’s two best finishes this season came with a 4th place finish at the Sony Open and a 8th place finish at the Shell Houston Open. Perez has played well here at Colonial as well, as he had a 4th place finish here last season. If you are looking for big bargain this weekend than Perez is your guy.
