2008 Fantasy Football Sleepers WR

Written August 29, 2008 by Jack Jones

If you play fantasy football then you know the value of finding a few sleepers to carry your team to the top.  You have to be careful when watching the NFL preseason because a long run by someone might put that guy on the top of everyone’s radar, but they didn’t quite factor in that he was beating up on the third string of the opposition.  That same guy might not even be starting come opening day.

In 2007 that player was Jacoby Jones, a wide receiver for the Houston Texans.  He lit up the preseason with several big time catches and kick returns during the exhibition season, but he ended his regular season with less than 150 receiving yards and not a single return for a touchdown.

Another thing you will want to avoid are rookies, since the likes of Adrian Peterson and Dwayne Bowe are rare and hard to spot.  However, the time to jump on a lot of players is when they enter their second year in the league, after they have failed to meet their lofty expectations.  Let’s take a look at some of the receivers that we are eyeing for this season:

Calvin Johnson

This guy is going to be a superstar in this league, and we still firmly believe that he will live up to the expectations placed on him after being picked second overall in 2007.  Many thought he was a disappointment with only 756 yards, but an injured back and an inconsistent offense were mainly to blame.

Greg Olsen

If you are looking at a solid tight end that doesn’t have big name status then look to Olsen.  This is the best target the Bears have for catching passes, and we don’t plan on seeing him dip into some sort of sophomore slump.  A preseason knee injury last year kept his numbers down below what he is capable of and we plan on seeing him having a great year in 2008.

Robert Meachem

This guy will most likely come as a shocker, and that’s what he’s going to do to everyone who forgot about him last year.  He was drafted no. 27 by New Orleans in 2007, but had knee problems which led to him showing up at training camp overweight and out of shape.  This led Sean Payton to put him on the inactive list for the entire season, but this year he has returned with a fire in his eye looking like the first rounder he was supposed to be.

Ted Ginn Jr.

Ginn only had 420 yards receiving a year ago and only returned one kick for a touchdown, which was disappointing when he was annoited as the next Devin Hester.  He will be a starter this year opposite of Derek Hagan, and during training camp it has appeared that he has made big strides from a year ago.
