2008 Georgetown NCAA Basketball Predictions & Season Preview

Written October 14, 2008 by Jack Jones

Georgetown basketball is back. In four years John Thompson III has gone 100-36 with the Hoyas and is coming off the first back-to-back regular season conference titles in school history. Sure he won’t have Jonathan Wallce, Roy Hibbert, or Patrick Ewing, Jr. this year, but he has built this program past the point of relying too heavily on any one player. This year’s team will definitely have a different look and feel to it, and they might not quite have enough talent to challenge the top tier Big East programs, but this team will be better than most in the conference and be right in the thick of things come March. The college basketball lines makers seem to agree with us as BetUS has Georgetown listed as a 8-to-1 favorite to win the conference title.

The loss of Hibbert is going to be big for the Hoya frontcourt, but his departure should make way for DaJuan Summers to shine. Summers was second to Hibbert in both points and rebounds with 11.1 and 5.4 per game. With him as the main focus down low the team will be able to run the floor a little better instead of slowing it down and pounding it inside. Austin Freeman could be a potent threat at small forward with his ability to knock down the three. He hit 40% as a freshman on his way to a 9.1 points per game average. Three newcomers will vie for the starting center role. Florida State transfer Julian Vaughn has the most experience, and Henry Sims is a little small so he’ll most likely see time backing up Summers. The real threat is going to be Greg Monroe, who came out of high school ranked in the top 10 by both Scout and Rivals. Thompson is hoping he can live up to the hype and have an immediate impact.

Chris Wright will try to take over the role of Wallace. Wright was plagued with an ankle injury in 2007-08, but is quick and can push the ball up the floor. As a sophomore with limited experience, does he have the leadership ability Wallace possessed? Senior Jessie Sapp may fill that role from the off-guard spot. Sapp led the team with 3.2 assists per game and added 9.7 points per while shooting 41% from beyond the arc. Omar Wattad and Jason Clark will provide backcourt depth.

Final Analysis

It’s a new year and some would say a new era for Georgetown basketball. With the departure of Hibbert, Wallace, and Ewing some new faces are going to step up. This program is on the up and up though with Thompson at the helm. They have made three straight trips to the NCAA tournament and would have three straight Sweet 16 showings if Davidson’s Stephon Curry hadn’t been so incredible in last year’s tournament. We see another NCAA trip in the Hoyas future as Sapp and Summers lead the way for a bright group of talented youngsters. You can cash in on Georgetown to win the national title at 20-to-1 at BetUS.
