2008 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Written July 11, 2008 by Jason Lowry

To help get you going for the upcoming football season Jason Lowry is ready to make his 2008 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football predictions. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a pretty average season where they finished up 7-6 after a pretty bad loss to Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl, but they were able to finsih 4-4 in the ACC which was good enough for 3rd place in the Coastal side of things. This season new head coach Paul Johnson will have to make due with only 9 returning starters. To get a better idea on just how good the Yellow Jackets will be in 2008, lets take a look at who they got leading their depth charts heading into the fall.

Offense:
The offense is the bigger winner out of the two units as it brings back 5 starters, and sophomore Josh Nesbitt is going to be the face of your offense at the quarterback position. Last year Nesbit threw only 38% and 2 interceptions in very limited action. Helping take some of the pressure off the QB will be fellow sophomore Jonathan Dwyer who is a going to due just fine filling in at the starting running back spot. The team also has some talent at the wide receiver spot in sophomores Correy Earls and Demaryius Thomas, as both seen action as a freshman. The offensive line might be good enough to carry this team as they will count heavy on star offensive tackle Andrew Gardner. If seniors David Brown and AJ Smith can step up an fill the wholes at center and right guard than this unit should be just fine.

Defense:
The defense is going to be one hurting unit as they are going to lack a lot of experience with only 4 returning starters, but the two guys in the middle of the defensive line could be just good enough to carry this team to another winning season. The senior duo of Vance Walker and Darryl Richard are two of the best the entire ACC has to offer. It should make life a lot easier for sophomore Derrick Morgan and senior Michael Johnson to step in and play well at the starting end spots. The linebacking group is a little weak with only one returning starter in Shane Bowen, but the team has high hopes for sophomores Anthony Barnes and Brad Jefferson at the other two starting spots. The secondary again with only one returning starter in senior corner Jahi Word-Daniels, and again they are full of sophomores here with Mario Butler at the other corner spot and Morgan Burnett and Dominique Reese at the two safety spots.

Prediction: 3rd in the ACC Coastal
We might be one year ahead of ourselves when we got these guys finishing 3rd again, but we are all over this young team, as we think they might be competing for a championship in a couple years. But 3rd in the ACC Coastal isn’t any compared to the either SEC division. For what its worth we got the Yellow Jackets finishing right around 7-5 overall and right around 4-4 in the conference.

Jason Lowry is continuing to make his way through some of the best teams and conferences in the NCAA, and its only a matter of time before his NFL predictions come rolling out.
