2008 Honda Classic

This week the PGA Tour will head to Palm Beach Gardens, FL for the Honda Classic. The players will battle the tough PGA National Resort & Spa’s Champion course that has hosted over 20 major championship events. Last year Mark Wilson was the surprise winner of the event after being the last one standing of a 4-man playoff. The event is growing in popularity since moving to the historic Champion course. While the event lacks some of the bigger names of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, they are expecting to see Ernie Els, Justin Leonard, Sergio Garcia, and many others to compete this week. With Tiger seemingly unbeatable so far this year, without him playing gives others a chance to take home a victory. This year the purse will be $5.5 million with $990,000 going to first place, also keep in mind that valuable FedEx Cup points will be at state. So lets take a look at our favorite, middle of the pack, and long shot that we think will perform well this week.

Favorite: Ernie Els 12-1

In just his second tour event of the year Els is the odds makers’ favorite to win the Honda Classic this weekend. Els considered by many as one of the best golfers in the world, hasn’t won a tour even since winning 3 in 2004. While Els struggled last week in the Accenture Match Play Tournament, he has never played well in that format. We think that Els is going to have a solid year in 2008, and with Tiger and Phil along with others not playing, Els has a great chance of taking home a victory this week.

Middle of the Pack: Justin Leonard 25-1

Leonard is playing some of his best golf of his career this year. He has played in 6 events this year and has finished in the top 10 four times. His best finish came at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic where he finished second. To compare his start to years past in 2007 Leonard played in 29 events and only finished in the top 10 five times. Leonard played well last week at the Accenture Match Play Championship, finishing 4th out of 64 of golf’s best. Though Els is the favorite, if he is to slip up we expect Leonard to sneak in for his first victory of the year.

Long Shot: David Toms 40-1

David Toms is our sleeper this week; with a weak field and his consistent play make him a good pick to surprise. Toms played well in this event last year finishing tied for 13th. Toms started Sunday tied for 4th but shot a 71 to fall back in the standings. Toms finished tied for 17th last week at the Accenture Match Play Championship. Toms streak of at least one victory ended last year when he failed to get a victory. The reason we like Toms to do well this week is that he has putted very well so far this year. He is currently 3rd in putts per round and that should continue to lead to solid rounds and consistent finishes.
