2008 Indianapolis Colts

Written August 7, 2008 by Jason Lowry

A new season of intense NFL Football is just around the corner, and Jason Lowry is ready to bring you his 2008 Indianapolis Colts season preview. The Colts are coming off a disappointing finish to the end of the 2007 season, as they were knocked out in their first game of the playoffs by San Diego, and had to watch their hopes of repeating as champions disappear. It wasn’t so much that the Colts played worse than they did in 2007, they just got hit with the injury bug hardcore. This year the Colts look to be healthy and primed for another Super Bowl season, but first lets see how they stack up against the rest of the teams in the AFC South, by taking a quick look at what they will be sending to the field in 2008.

Offense:
If Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning both come back healthy then there is no question that this offense will be back in the form that led them to a Super Bowl two years ago. Manning still put up one hell of a season, and when you got guys like Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Dallas Clark bringing in balls, its easy to why. This year the Colts decided to bulk up the running game by bringing in former Colt Dominic Rhodes. If Rhodes returns to his form from before when he had on a Colts jersey, this offense somehow gets better. The offensive line took a minor hit when right guard Jake Scott headed over to the Titans, but the rest of the line is still there, leaving quite the battle for the open spot. As it looks now Charlie Johnson will move in from tackle, and get the first crack, but keep your eye close on rookie Mike Pollak. Expect a big season from this unit, as they are one of few teams that can put points on the board like the Patriots.

Defense:
Its hard to imagine what this unit looked like before head coach Tony Dungy worked his magic, and now this team is loaded with talent, including last year’s Defensive Player of the Year Safety Bob Sanders. The defensive line needs both Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis to come back healthy, as they form one of the best end combos in the game. The linebackers are solid Freddy Keiaho, Tyhuan Hagler, and the leader of the group Gary Brackett. The key to the entire defense is Bob Sanders, when he is on the field the team instantly plays way better. Sanders can not only defend the pass, but he excels at coming in and stuffing the run. Adding to the mix is Antoine Bethea who along side Sanders, went to the Pro Bowl. The corners get the job done in Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden. Put this group together as a whole, and you just might have the best secondary in the game.

Special Teams:
The team seems happy with both kicker Adam Vinatieri and Hunter Smith, and its easy to see why after the season they put up last year. It looks like T.J. Rushing will remain the teams return specialist, and could be just beginning to showcase his talents at this position.

Prediction: 1st in the AFC South
Though the Colts have their hands full playing in one of the toughest division in all of the NFL, we don’t see how Peyton Manning would let this team finish any worse. Both the Titans and the Jaguars look like they are primed for an even better 2008, but luckily for the Colts so are they. We got the Colts winning this division by a couple as we see them finishing up right around 13-3
