2008 Indy 500 Predictions

Written May 21, 2008 by Jack Jones

The Indianapolis 500 is just around the corner as it is set to get underway Sunday May 25th. This is the biggest IRL race of the year and is a Memorial Day treat for all you racing fans out there. With only a couple days left till race day we figured we would make our predictions on the race. The 200-lap 500-mile race is set to start at about 1:11(et) and will be aired on ABC. So grab a few beers and get ready to enjoy the race. The previous two winners of the race are not in the field; Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. The last driver to win the Indy 500 that is in the field this weekend is Dan Wheldon who won it in 2005. In our opinion there are 6 drivers with a real legit shot to win the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Today we are going to pick our 1-2-3 finish for the race, but if you want a little closer look at the other drivers be sure to check out our odds article.

1. Scott Dixon 3-1 odds at Sportbook.com

Dixon is a big time threat this weekend, and just missed out last year with a 2nd place finish behind Franchitti. Dixon is part of the Target Chip Ganassi team and currently in 2nd place in the point standings. He has had a pretty solid season so far in the first 4 races of the season. Dixon started off the season with a win at the Homestead race, but had a bad second race where he finished 22nd because of a mechanical issue. He has got things going again with back-to-back 3rd place finishes in the two races leading up to the Indy 500. Dixon is a real threat and we believe he can hold off the other big drivers and win the Indy 500.

2. Helio Castroneves 9-2 odds at Sportsbook.com

Castroneves really knows how to get things going at the Indy 500 as seemingly always races good here. He has already crossed the finish line first two times in his career at the Indy 500, when he won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002. So far this season Castroneves has finished in the top 5 in every race and we don’t see a reason why that would change this weekend. We had a hard time not picking this guy first, so if Dixon slips up at all then this could be Castroneves’s race and his 3rd Indy 500 victory.

3. Marco Andretti 7-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Andretti is a big riser in the IRL series and it really should come at know surprise looking at this guys family background. For those who don’t know he is the grandson of racing legend Mario Andretti and the son of Andretti Green Racing team owner Michael Andretti. While we really think that this guy is going to win at least 1 Indy 500 in his career, we don’t think that it will be coming this weekend. A 3rd place finish would be a good start and a good story for this young driver. Andretti is currently ranked 7th in the point standings and has to solid 4th place finishes this weekend. Look for a couple family tips to help Marco out and put him in the top 3, and if everything goes right you never know this guy might steal the show.

There you have it our 1-2-3 finish for the Indy 500. If you are looking to make a bet on this race be sure to head over to Sportsbook.com and get an account up an running today.
