2008 MAC Basketball Tournament Predictions

Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

The 2008 MAC Tournament is set to get underway March 12th and wind up on March 15th. The MAC Tournament is set to take place at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The 12 team league will adopt the similar 12 team bracket, and give the best 4 regular season teams a bye in the first round and leave the rest of the league to win 4 games in 4 days. The team is unlike the SEC in that even though their conference is split into two divisions the East and the West the top 4 records get the bye and not how you finish in your respected division. Kent St. looks to be headed for the #1 seed with Akron and Western Michigan also receiving free passes. The 4th seed is still up for grabs as there are 3 teams sitting at 8-7 with one game remaining. This isn’t a very good conference, but it is pretty competitive. This could lead to a crazy tournament with an unknown team walking away victorious. Kent St. is the only team that will get consideration if they don’t win the tournament, as they have an impressive RPI of 35 and have wins over tournament teams such as Illinois State and St. Marys. With 8 teams possibly finishing at .500 or better in conference play and teams such as Ohio, Toledo, and Bowling Green beating Kent St. in conference play it shows that they can be beat and this is pretty much anyone’s tournament. While they don’t have many big time players, this could be a fun tournament to see unfold. So lets take a look at who we think will walk away the winner, and a team that we think might pull off the upset in Cleveland.

Winner: Kent St. Golden Flashes

While they will need a victory over Akron to take home the outright regular season championship, this is easily the best team in the conference. They will likely be in tough games from start to finish of the tournament, but with a chance to take the selection committee out of play we see them coming in focused and ready to win. Their big non-conference wins are the reason we really this team and think they could surprise someone in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Junior Al Fisher bringing in 14 PPG and 4.2 APG, and senior Mike Scott’s 13 PPG and 6 RPG leads them.

Big Mover:

This was one of the toughest choices we had to make in conference tournaments, because Kent St. is really the only team that is playing to help themselves improve their resume. The rest of the league is just hoping to catch fire and runway with the title. So while we don’t see this happening this is our team that could upset Kent St. and earn an automatic spot in the field of 65. So we are going with the Ohio Bobcats as they have played well in conference play and shown that they can beat Kent St. if given the chance. They also have an impressive win at Maryland in non-conference play. Senior Leon Williams 15.8 PPG and 9.7 RPG lead the Bobcats on the floor. They will need him to take control and come to play each and every game. Their chances will also greatly improve if they can get the 4th seed in the tournament, but will likely mean they will see Kent St. before the finals.
