2008 Maryland Terrapins
Written July 11, 2008 by Jason Lowry
If you are ready for the upcoming football season, then you will enjoy Jason Lowry’s 2008 Maryland Terrapins football predictions. The Terrapins are coming off a pretty average season where they finished the regular season at 6-6 overall and 3-5 in their conference, before losing to Oregon State in the Emerald Bowl game. The team does return 13 starters, and it will be up to head coach Ralph Friedgen to get this team going in the right direction. To get a good idea at just how good the Terrapins will be, lets take a look at what they will be bringing to both sides of the ball in 2008.
Offense:
The Terrapins return 8 starters on this side of the ball and it looks like Florida transfer Josh Portis will get the first shot at the quarterback spot, but they do have 2 guys that seen some action last season behind him. It looks like sophomore Mogan Green will be the teams new starting running back after the team lost 2 of its best backs from last season. Portis should have plenty of weapons to throw at, and the best is going to be Darrius Heyward-Bey who just might be the best the ACC has to offer. The team also has another solid receiver in senior Isiah williams. The offensive line should be pretty solid as they have 4 starters coming back from last season, and senior center Edwin Williams is likely the best center in the ACC, and seniors LG Jamie Thomas, RT Dane Randolph, and LT Scott Burley are all top conference players. Junior Phil Costa will likely step in at the open right guard spot.
Defense:
The defense might have its struggles at time, as they only return 5 starters on this side of the ball. The defensive line is where things are likely going to get a little rough, as they only return 2 starters here, seniors DT Jeremy Navarre and DE Trey Covington are solid players in the ACC. The team will likely be going with senior Mack Frost and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Dion Armstrong. The linebacking group is where things start getting better, as they return 2 of the 3 starters from last year. It will need seniors Moise Fokou and Dave Philistin to lead young sophomore Adrian Moten to the new starting spot. Philistin is one of the best at middle linebacker and should take a lot of pressure off Moten. The secondary might not be as good as the linebacking group, but they should be average here. They only return one starter in senior corner Kevin Barnes who did have 4 interceptions a year ago. Junior Anthony Wiseman will likely start opposite of Barnes at the other corner spot. The safety spots will likely be taken over by senior Jeff allen and sophomore Antwine Perez.
Prediction: 3rd in the ACC Atlantic
We like what we see with the Terrapins this season, and we think things are going to get a lot better this season. The Terrapins have plenty of talent on the football field to win at least 8 or 9 games this season and likely go 5-3 this season in the Atlantic division.
