2008 Memorial Tournament

Written May 26, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Memorial Tournament is set to get underway Thursday May 29th and finish up on Sunday afternoon. The tournament is held at a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course in Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. There was talks that Tiger Woods was going to make his comeback performance this weekend, but fans will have to continue to wait as he has backed out of competition for at least another week. Last week fans saw Phil Mickelson take home his 2nd win of the season at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. While its disappointing that Tiger Woods won’t be in action this weekend there are still plenty of good golfers set to take action this weekend. Last week we correctly picked Mickelson to take home the trophy at Colonial. We also weren’t to far off with our long shot of the week as Pat Perez came in 6th last weekend. Here is a look at our picks this week to do well at the Memorial Tournament.

Favorite: Stewart Cink 15-1 at Sportsbook.com

Even with Phil Mickelson in the field we aren’t picking the lefty to win in back-to-back weeks. This week we are going with a new pick as a favorite in Cink. While Cink hasn’t won a tournament since 2004 he has played some of his best golf so far this season. He already has two 2nd and 3rd place finishes, and 6 finishes in the top 10. Cink has done well at the Memorial before as he finished tied for 5th last year. We are kind of going out on a limb with this pick, but we really like how he is playing this year. He is 5th in greens in regulation and 37th in putting average this year.

Middle of the Pack: Kenny Perry 30-1 at Sportsbook.com

Perry has been pretty solid this season as he has a 2nd place finish at the AT%T Classic and a 3rd place finish at the Chrysler Classic this season. The reason we like Perry is his past success Muirfield Village Golf Club. Perry won the tournament back in 2003 and returned to back in contention last year as he came in tied for 3rd. Perry is 23rd in total driving and does a pretty good job at getting on the green in two as he is 22nd in greens in regulation. If you want a solid pick in the middle of the field than Perry is your man.

Long Shot: Carl Pettersson 60-1 at Sportsbook.com

Pettersson is won here back in 2006 and we feel like he is the best bet if you are looking for someone with big odds this weekend. Pettersson hasn’t won on tour since, and we think that a return to a course he has had success on will bring a little extra life to his game. Pettersson does most of his damage on the green where he is 47th in putting average. He will need his irons to pick it up if he wants a legit shot at winning the tournament, as he is currently 121st in greens in regulation. We have been hot with our long shot picks, so don’t be surprise to see Pettersson in contention come Sunday afternoon.
