2008 MLB Predictions

Last year the Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies for their second World Series victory of the decade. While the Red Sox had to battle their way to the final series of the season, the Rockies came out of no where and won 21 times in 22 games on their way to their first World Series appearance. 2008 should be a very interesting season as there are at least two solid teams in every division that could win it all this year. With no true standout team to beat in 2008, picking who wins was a tough process. Here is a look at our predictions on how the season will turn out.

National League

In 2008 we like the Mets to take down the East, the Cubs in the Central, and the Diamondbacks from the West. While the Cubs and Diamondbacks won their division in 2007, the Mets had one of the worst collapses ever. When we had to pick a wild card winner we decided to go with the Phillies. While the Phillies might not be the best team compared to the Dodgers and Rockies of the West, they will feast on a weak division. The Brewers also could be a team to watch if the Cardinals and Astros don’t improve the Central will by far be the worst division of both leagues. As for the playoffs we are expecting a first round match up of the Mets vs. Diamondbacks and Phillies vs. Cubs. With the Mets and Cubs doing battle in the NLCS, and the Mets representing the NL in the World Series.

American League

With the Red Sox as the team to beat after a very impressive run in 2007, we aren’t expecting them to repeat. We like the Yankees to take back over the East, the Tigers to surge to the top of the Central, and the Angels to take control of the West. While we expect a drop off from the Red Sox, we still like them to edge out the Indians and Mariners for the wild card spot. The only change from last year is in the Central where the Indians didn’t do anything this off-season while the Tigers now have an all-star lineup that compares to that of the Yankees. When the regular season winds down we like the Tigers vs. Red Sox and the Yankees vs. Angeles in the first round. In what might be the most explosive ALCS with the offense powers of the Tigers and Yankees clashing off for the chance to represent the AL in the World Series. We are going with the Tigers to be the last team in the AL standing as they have the better pitching of the two teams.

World Series

This leads us to a World Series match up of the Mets vs. Tigers. We are going with the Tigers as they get another shot at a ring after losing to the Cardinals two seasons ago. While the Mets have the offense to try and keep up with the Tigers and the likes of the newly acquired Johan Santana to lead them on the mound they should be able to make the series last more than the minimal 4 games that it went last year. We like the Tigers to win in 6 games with Santana getting the Mets only two wins.
