2008 NC State Wolfpack

Written July 13, 2008 by Jason Lowry

It’s getting that time of year where fans start get that edge for the upcoming football season, and
Jason Lowry is going to help you out with his 2008 NC State Wolfpack football predictions. The Wolfpack struggled in 2007 going 5-7 overall and just 3-5 in the ACC Atlantic division. Its been 2 years in a row that the Wolfpack failed to make a bowl game, and 2nd year coach Tom O’Brien has the tough task of doing so in 2008 with only 10 returning starters. The Wolfpack have a lot of holes to fill this season, and to get a good idea of what they will be lining up in 2008, we are going to take a closer look at both sides of the ball.

Offense:
The offense only returns 6 starters to a unit that was statistically one of the worst in the ACC last season. The team does bring back their starting quarterback in senior Daniel Evans who threw for over 2,000 yards last season. The team lost a lot of talent at the receiver spot, and will likely rely heavily on junior Donald Bowens who led the team last season with nearly 600 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns. The Wolfpack will likely rely on sophomore Jarvis Williams to take over the other starting spot. They also have one of the best tight ends in the ACC in senior Anthony Hill. The team will likely use a two back system with senior Andre Brown and junior Jamelle Eugene. The offensive line brings back 3 of its 5 starters from last season, and the best of the group is easily senior right guard Curtis Crouch. It looks like junior Jeraill McCuller will take over at the open right tackle spot and senior John Bedics will be the new left guard for the Wolfpack.

Defense:
The Wolfpack only return 4 starters on the defense side of things, and its going to need a lot of quality play from many new faces this season. The defensive line brings back two of the starters from last season, and junior defensive end Willie Young is one of the best at his position in the ACC. The team will likely turn to sophomore Markus Kuhn at the other end spot, while senior Keith Williams takes over at the open tackle spot. The Wolfpack should struggle a little bit at the linebacking spots, as they don’t have any starters returning this season. The team does have some experience in junior middle linebacker Ray Michel and sophomore strong side backer Nate Irving, but they will be sending redshirt freshman Audie Cole at the weak side spot. The secondary brings back both starting corners from last season, and it looks like sophomore Javon Walker will team up with senior JC Neal at the open safety spots.

Prediction: 6th in the ACC Atlantic
This team doesn’t bring back much for a team that only won 5 games from a year ago. We think that O’Brien will be able to get the job done and take this team back to a bowl game, but that isn’t going to happen this season. We think that this team might take another step back before it goes forward again. We are predicting a 4 win season for the Wolfpack in 2008.
