2008 NFL Draft Losers

Each and every year there are teams that walk away from the NFL Draft and look like they really hit it big with some great selections throughout the draft, but where there are winners, there are usually losers as well. We have already broken down the teams who we thought had the 5 best drafts, so we decided it was a good idea to look at the other end of the tunnel and pick our 5 worst drafts. Teams can have big first round picks, but if they fail to make any other big splashes in the later rounds, than the draft as a whole doesn’t look so good. So lets take a look at who we thought stunk it up this year, going from the very worst up.

1. Cincinnati Bengals

This team is a prime example of getting a quality 1st round player and then leaving the rest of the draft up in the air. This team helped out their defense in the first round with the pick of USC’s OLB Keith Rivers at #9. Where we feel things took a turn is when they picked WR Jerome Simpson out of Coast Carolina, when much higher ranked players like Limas Sweed, DeSean Jackson, and Malcom Kelly. The team then risked their 3rd round pick on DT Pat Sims out of Auburn who has some character issues that could play a big role in the value of this pick. The rest of their draft was sub par, as no real names seem to stick out. The Bengals needed to get much better from the draft, and we aren’t so sure they did a very good job.

2. Tennessee Titans

We believed that the main goal of the 2008 draft for the Titans, was to give QB Vince Young some playmakers at the receiver position, and the first WR they picked was Lavelle Hawkins out of California in the 4th round. The Titans also picked a running back in the 1st or 2nd round for the 3rd straight year, when they pick RB Chris Johnson out of East Carolina in the 1st round at pick 24. Johnson will likely be a decent back, but the team already has LenDale White and Chris Henry on their roster. The Titans would have been much better off if they had used the pick elsewhere.

3. New York Jets

While this isn’t entirely their fault as they really could of used McFadden to slip to them in the 1st round. With the 6th pick in the first round the Jets took DE/OLB Vernon Gholston out of Ohio State. This pick could go both ways as Gholston has great potential but potential doesn’t always guarantee a good pick. The team then really got people scratching their heads when they seemed to reach for TE Dustin Keller out of Purdue after a first round trade with Green Bay to pick at #30. With only these two picks in the first 3 rounds, we think the Jets really came away empty handed in this year’s draft

4. Houston Texans

The Texans just didn’t have the draft they needed and it all started when they moved into the 1st round to take OT Duane Brown out of Virginia Tech. We along with many others just don’t think that Brown is ever going to be a dominant player in the NFL. So after missing in the 1st round the team we feel the team continued to pick players a little to early. We think they reached on West Virginia RB Steve Slaton in the 3rd round, and Texas DT Frank Okam.

5. Chicago Bears

This might surprise some fans that the Bear’s made our list for top 5 worst drafts, but the team is really missing its chances to win a Super Bowl with their outstanding defense. While the Bears seem set on quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton in 2008, we can’t believe this team didn’t take ONE QB out of 12 total picks they had. On top of that they didn’t get a big time WR, which is something the team really needed to address in the draft. We are not sold on 3rd round pick Earl Bennett out of Vanderbilt and 7th round pick Marcus Monk. So even though the Bears got some good players, we don’t think they made this team into a Super Bowl contender in 2008.

So there you have it are 5 worst drafts in 2008. Be sure to check back this summer, as we will be doing full team previews, and much more. As always feel free to leave any comments in our comment box.
