2008 NFL Mock Draft

The NFL draft is fast approaching and fans everywhere are wondering whom their teams are going to take in this year’s draft. The draft is set to take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York on April 26-27. With a bunch of very talented underclassmen and some amazing senior talent, teams will spend the next couple months dissecting all kinds of players hoping to find gold in this years draft. While a lot can happen with players stock rising and falling, here is a look at our first round projections for the 2008 NFL Draft.

1. Miami Dolphins - Matt Ryan, QB Boston College

John Beck didn’t look like the answer in limited action last year, and with Ryan being the only quarterback that seems to go in the first round it will be hard for them to pass him up. Don’t rule out them going after Chris Long, Sedrick Ellis, or trading the pick away.

2. St. Louis - Jake Long, OT Michigan

With the Rams needing major help at tackle, Long has the potential to be a pro bowler for many years to come. There is still an outside chance that the team will go after Chris Long if he is still available, as they need help at defensive end as well.

3. Atlanta - Chris Long DE, Virginia

With the signing of Michael Turner in Free agency it is unlikely that the team will waste this pick on Darren McFadden. They would love to get Ryan to fill their void at QB, but will settle for Chris Long. I don’t think you can pass up on this type of player, and a team in need almost everything this would be a good fit.

4. Oakland - Glen Dorsey, DT LSU

The Raiders were awful at stopping the run and a DT is tops on their wish list. While McFadden is tempting, they have much bigger concerns to fill. While Ellis would be the safer pick, we expect Al Davis to take chance on Dorsey and hope he can be the dominant player that once had him atop everyone’s draft board.

5. Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT Boise State

While the Chiefs hoped that teams would pass on Jake Long and let him fall into their laps, it is unlikely they will get that lucky. The Chiefs need help on the line bad and while there are better players still on the board, they have to pick based on need and get Clady.

6. New York Jets - Darren McFadden, RB Arkansas

The team needs more help on the defensive side of things, but based on what happened last year with Adrian Peterson, there is no way they can pass him up. Expect Jets fans to go nuts if they are able to steal McFadden at pick #6.

7. New England Patriots - Vernon Gholston, DE Ohio State

This seems to be a lock if Gholston is still around. The Patriots love his ability to play defensive end and linebacker. Here is a scary thought, if the Jets pass on McFadden, could you imagine him along side Brady, Moss, and Welker?

8. Baltimore Ravens - Mike Jenkings, CB South Florida

This guy looked great at the combine and with the Ravens in need of a corner to fill in for the aging Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle Jenkings would be a great addition.

9. Cincinnati Bengals - Seddrick Ellis, DT USC

If the Bengals are able to land this type of player this late in the draft, they will have Bengal’s fans cheering all the way to the opening game. Ellis is a monster on the line and would help the Bengal’s poor defense.

10. New Orleans Saints - Leodis McKelvin, CB Troy

The team is in need of another big time corner to go opposite of Mike McKenzie, and McKelvin can fill that need with the 10th pick.

11. Buffalo Bills - Phillip Merling, DE Clemson

While the team needs a WR and might take one here, we think that they can still get a quality WR with their second pick. On the other hand there will be no one close to Merling when the Bills get called up in round 2.

12. Denver Broncos - Keith Rivers, OLB USC

The Bronco’s defense fell apart last year and the front 7 is where the problems start. Rivers is a stud linebacker and should fit in well in Denver. The team also needs help on the offensive line and could go with Jeff Otah if they decide to go that way.

13. Carolina Panthers - Limas Sweed, WR Texas

With Dwayne Jarrett not performing to the potential the team had hoped for, we like the Panthers to take the first WR in the draft. They get a good one in Sweed, who many think can be the next Roy Williams from Detroit.

14. Chicago Bears - Jeff Otah, OT Pittsburgh

With the signing of Grossman it looks like the Bears are going to give him another shot. The next big hole that needs filled is on the line and Otah is the best available.

15. Detroit Lions - Chris Williams, OT Vanderbilt

The Lions have been awful on the offensive line, as they have wasted numerous draft picks on receivers. They will finally get it right in 2008 and start building the offense from the inside out.

16. Arizona Cardinals - Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois

Edgerrin James has looked pretty good as a Cardinal so far since coming from the Colts, but he is getting old and could use some help in the workload. With many teams going to a two back system, Mendenhall would be a great fit here.

17. Minnesota Vikings - Derrick Harvey, DE Florida

The Vikings will need to help out a unit that struggled to get pressure from the right side. Harvey might not be the best in the draft, but has the potential to become a very solid defensive end by the time its all said and done.

18. Houston Texans - Brandon Flowers, CB Virginia Tech

The Texans need help at the corner position and could wind up getting a steal in Flowers this late in the draft. The team also is in need of a running back and could take Jonathan Stewart; if they decide that’s the route they want to take.

19. Philadelphia Eagles - Malcom Kelly, WR Oklahoma

While the Eagles tend to avoid taking receivers in the first round, they need to give Donovan McNabb some help on the outside if they want to compete in the NFC East.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jonathan Stewart, RB Oregon

The team could definitely use some help at the running back position, and what a perfect fit in Stewart. While it could be a stretch for Stewart to still be on the board, the team could go after a corner such Reggie Smith from Oklahoma.

21. Washington Redskins - Dan Connor, LB Penn State

If you are going to get a linebacker and want a solid pick, then taking one for the University of Penn State usually ends up in a great pick. The Redskins could make a reach and go after Mario Manningham or James Hardy.

22. Dallas Cowboys - Felix Jones, RB Arkansas

While its not the Arkansas running back Jerry Jones is looking for, he is still getting a very good running back in Jones, who should fit in very will with Marion Barber III.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers - Branden Albert, G Virginia

The Steelers need help at both the tackle and guard spots, and should take the best available in Albert. Albert is in a league of his own when it comes to guards in the draft.

24. Tennessee Titans - DeSean Jackson, WR California

With the signing of Alge Crumpler to play TE the team could use a big time threat at the WR spot. Jackson would be a great fit here, and he also should help out in the return game.

25. Seattle Seahawks - Sam Baker, OT USC

The Seahawks could use some help on the offensive line and Baker is a solid 4-year starter that can help this team out in the future. The team has a couple options at tackle and could go after Gosder Cherilus or Chris Williamson.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars - Mario Manningham, WR Michigan

Manningham had a terrible combine or he would be long gone by the time the Jags came up. We believe Manninghamm will be a solid NFL receiver and the combine can be overrated as receivers seem to be more of a hit and miss than a for sure thing.

27. San Diego Chargers - Kenny Phillips, FS Miami

While the Chargers could use some help on the line, this is a no doubter if Phillips is still on the board. Phillips is the best safety in the draft and could make an instant impact in a fast improving Chargers secondary.

28. Dallas Cowboys - Reggie Smith, CB Oklahoma

The Cowboys don’t have many holes and if they already have Felix Jones we look for them to look at the defensive side of things. Smith is a solid pick here to develop under Newman and Henry.

29. San Francisco 49ers - Devin Thomas, WR Michigan St.

The 49ers are in great need of a big time target to keep teams from stacking the box to stop RB Frank Gore. Thomas not only has great speed he is 6′2 and could be a steal this late in the draft.

30. Green Bay Packers - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB Tennessee State

Though the Packers might have one of the best 1-2 combos right now at corner with Charles Woodson and Al Harris, both are getting older and the need a solid number 3 to come in on nickel and dime packages.

31. New York Giants - Aquib Talib, CB Kansas

The Giants need help at the corner spot and if they can land Talib it would be a very solid pick with the final pick in the first round. If Talib is taken earlier in the first round, look for the Giants to go after a linebacker.
