2008 Northern Trust Open
February 11, 2008
This week golf’s best will take their game to Hollywood, for the newly named Northern Trust Open. The stage is set at one of golf’s greatest courses at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. This is the first year the tournament will be sponsored by Northern Trust. It first started out as the Los Angles Open and most recently over the last 19 years the Nissan Open. With a total purse of $6,200,000, with the winning share of $1,116,000 going to best golfer this week
While the field lacks a few familiar faces in Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, 17 of the top 20 will populate a field of 144 players. Many players will be making their first PGA TOUR start of 2008 this week including, Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Adam Scott, and Retief Goosen. The key to success at Riviera is putting, and having one of the best putting performances of the year. Of the past 15 tournaments played at Riviera, the winners have had one of their two best putting weeks of the season. So with that being said we are going to a look at three golfers who we think have a chance this week. We will first look at one of the favorites, then a middle of the pack player, and a long shot.
Adam Scott 12-1
While Mickelson is the favorite this week we are unsure of his ability to perform after the struggles he had last week at the Pebble Beach Pro Am. Though Scott is making his first start on the PGA TOUR he is coming off an impressive win on the European Tour at the Qatar Masters, when he shot an amazing 61 in the final round. Scott is a former winner of this tournament, winning it back in 2005 with his best putting performance of that year. Scott is an overall great putter and we look for him to do very well this week.
Padraig Harrington 25-1
2007 British Open champion Harrington is primed for a good showing on U.S. soil. Coming in as one of the best putters in the game, Harrington finished 2007 in 7th place in average putts per round. . Harrington had a decent showing last week at the Pebble Peach Pro Am finishing around the top 15. With a few days of preparation we look for Harrington to get a good feel for the greens this week and have the putting performance necessary to take down Riviera.
Tim Clark 80 -1
We are taking the South African as a major long shot this week to have a good showing at the Riviera. Though Clark has yet to perform well in 2008, his numbers show that he is very capable of doing well. Clark has yet to finish as the leader in the clubhouse after the final round, but we won’t be surprised if he shocks everyone this week. Clark has finished second five times, with three of them coming in 2007. In a tournament where putting matters most, Clark is coming off a season where he finished first in average putts per round.
