2008 Offensive Rookie of the Year
Written August 22, 2008 by Jason Lowry
With another NFL season just around the corner, Jason Lowry is going to bring you his 2008 offensive rookie of the year predictions. Last year Adrian Peterson of the Vikings took home the trophy hands down, after bursting on the scene running all over teams, including setting the NFL single game rushing record last season. When you talk about players winning the offensive rookie of the year, you mainly look at running backs, as they have the easiest transition from college to the NFL, and they get a lot of touches as well. Since the award has been handed out 30 out of 39 has went to a running back. One trend to watch out for is after only one quarterback won the award in the first 35 years, there have been two (Ben Roethlisberger and Vince Young) in the last 4 years. Here is a look at the top 3 guys we see having the best chance of walking away with the trophy.
1. Darren McFadden +300 to win at Sportsbook.com
When you talk about an explosive back coming out of college, this guy is just that. While it will be hard to put up numbers equal to what Adrian Peterson did in his rookie season, we feel McFadden has what it takes to take home the award this season. The Raiders believed that too, as they grabbed him a No. 4 overall even though they had many other positions they could of went after. Plus not only can this guy run, but he has great hands out of the backfield, and has shown he can throw the ball as well. Look for McFadden to put up a good number of touchdowns and run away with this award.
2. Jonathan Stewart +600 to win at Sportsbook.com
Many considered Stewart to be the second best back in the draft, and the Carolina Panthers didn’t let that change, as they grabbed him at No. 13 in the first round. Stewart is going to have a great chance to shine with the Panthers this season, as he will get many of the carries from the departed DeShaun Foster. The Panthers are a team that could turn things around this season, after a disappointing year last season. If they do McFadden may get his biggest challenge in Stewart.
3. Matt Ryan +1000 to win at Sportsbook.com
Due to the recent success of quarterbacks, we figured why not Matt Ryan? The Atlanta Falcons grabbed him at No. 3, and many believe this guy is the real deal, and will be the next great thing at quarterback. Ryan will definitely be put to the test, as he goes to a team that has been messed up ever since the problems with former quarterback Michael Vick. Ryan took a pretty average Boston College team and turned them into National Championship contenders, and who knows maybe he will do the same thing with the Falcons.
So there you have it the 3 guys we think have the best shot at winning offensive rookie of the year in 2008.
