2008 Oklahoma State Basketball Preview & Season Predictions
Written October 13, 2008 by Jack Jones

The Oklahoma State basketball team is going to have a different look to it this year. For the first time since 1990 a Sutton will not be head coach. It started with Eddie Sutton, who lasted through 2006, then his son Sean took over for two season before being fired in the spring. Gone with this is the ball-control, defensive minded system. Travis Ford comes in as a disciple of Rick Pitino and that means a fast-paced offense and full court pressure on defense. Still, there is a lot of quality returning for the Cowboys this year so Ford should get his tenure off to a decent start. The college basketball odds agree with us too, as Oklahoma State is 7.5 to win to win the Big 12 title at BetUS.
The frontcourt is pretty bare, but that’s not a terrible thing with the team looking to pick up the tempo. The transfer of Martavius Adams hurts them depth-wise, but he wasn’t a real big contributor anyway. Sophomore Ibrahima Thomas started to develop into a decent center as the season progressed and with some added muscle he could be poised for a big year. He can shoot from outside as well, which fits in nicely with how Ford likes to use the big men. Anthony Brown as hurt for most of last year, and he’s going to have to stay healthy and eat up minutes. Marshall Moses needs to keep getting better, as the power forward is a little small for his position in the Big 12.
At point guard the team should be set. There is Byron Eaton who showed flashes of brilliance towards the end of last year, but Ford wants him in better shape so he can push the ball. Backing him up will be Keiton Page, who averaged over 40 ppg in Oklahoma high school basketball. The other two outside spots are the strength of the team. James Anderson is a lights out shooter who led the team in scoring. Junior Obi Muonelo can also be counted on to do it all, while Terrel Harris is the best athlete on the squad. Brad Garrett is another guy who can shoot the ball extremely well from the outside, but he needs to stay healthy after playing only two games as a sophomore.
Final Analysis – 6th in our Big 12 Basketball Predictions
Ford inherits a team that is a pretty good fit for his style of play. There are a lot of shooters and guards, but the inside play could decide on whether this team returns to the NCAA tournament. We think that they are going to be good enough to get the job done, and break the streak of three straight trips to the NIT. You can bet Oklahoma State at 200 to win to win the national title.
