2008 Pac 10 Basketball Tournament Predictions
The Pac 10 is considered one of the toughest conferences in the country and they are set to get their conference tournament underway on March 12th and finish up by crowning a champion on March 15th. The Pac 10 tournament will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angels, California. The 10-team league will award its top 6 teams with a bye on the first day of games and the bottom 4 will have to win 4 games in 4 days if they want the coveted automatic bid into the tournament. UCLA, Stanford, USC, WASHINGTON St, and Arizona St, with Oregon and Arizona battling in the final game in the regular season for the 6th spot, hold the top five spots. The top four teams are in the NCAA Tournament for sure in UCLA, Stanford, USC and Washington St. The Arizona Wildcats are another team that has a great chance to make it, but will likely need to take care of business against Oregon in the final regular season game or win a couple games in the Pac 10 Tournament. Arizona St’s 19-11 record gives the idea that they might have a chance to get an invitation, but they will need to most likely make the finals of the tournament to even have a chance. So lets take a look at who we think will win the Pac 10 Tournament, and who will make the biggest move with a good showing.
Winner: UCLA Bruins
This is just simply a team that knows how to win as they have pulled off two improbable wins in their last two games over Stanford and Cal. The Bruins were the outright winners of the Pac 10 going 16-2 in the conference and have an overall record of 28-3. The Bruins will come into the tournament #3 in the country and will be fighting for one of the 4 #1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins will likely be tested throughout the tournament but we think they will be able to withstand any opponent and end up cutting down the nets when it’s all said and done. The Bruins will be relying on freshman sensation Kevin Love to come in and have a big tournament performance and to lead them to a National Championship.
Big Mover: USC Trojans
While Arizona has the most to gain, the Trojans might be the best 20-10 team in the country and they showed it in their final game of the regular season knocking off a top 10 team in Stanford. They also have won 8 out of their last 12. While some believe they are still a bubble team we don’t think there is any question if the are in. The reason we have them as the big mover is because they are probably sitting at a pretty low seed right now, but if they are able to make a good showing in the Pac 10 tournament they could rise to at least a 6 or 7 seed if not better. The Trojans have played many of the toughest teams in the nation close including UCLA, Memphis, and Kansas. The Trojans will be relying heavily on a freshman sensation of their own in O.J. Mayo, who will come in averaging over 20 PPG.
