2008 PGA Championship Predictions
Written by Jason Lowry
Just two weeks ago we were talking about the British Open, and now we are just one week away from the final major of the season, the 2008 PGA Championship. Winning a major is what many golfers consider something you must do before you are doneplaying , in order to have a successful career. But winning the PGA Championship has a little extra incentive to go with it as well, the champion of this event has a free invitation to the 4 majors for the next 5 years, they never have to qualify for the PGA Championship again, and you also receive your PGA Tour membership for the next 5 seasons. So many golfers are likely glad that a guy named Tiger Woods will be out this weekend, as he has won this event the previous two years, and everyone knows Woods needs no help in qualifying for anything. The PGA Championship is set to get underway on Aug. 7th and conclude Aug. 10 at Oakland Hills Country Club. So who will be the winner of what many call “Glory’s last shot?” Here is professional handicapper Jason Lowry’s 3 golfers to watch at the PGA Championship.
Favorite: Phil Mickelson +600
Mickelson has really struggled on coming through at the majors since winning back-to-back majors, when he won the PGA Championship at the end of 2005 and started off winning the Masters in 2006. Mickelson played well at the Masters finishing tied for 5th, but didn’t finish better than 18th at the US and British Opens. Mickelson has played well enough this season to put him 3rd in both the point and money list standings, so his game isn’t too far off. If Mickelson wants to win this tournament he has to get going off the tee, as he has simply stunk it up with the driver this season. We like Mickelson’s chances this weekend, and think its time he got back to winning majors.
Middle of the Pack: KJ Choi +2200
We are going out on a limb taking Choi, as he really hasn’t been all that impressive in majors throughout his career, but he has played well at the PGA Championship over the last few years including a 6th and 7th place finish in 2004 and 2006. Choi also played well at the British Open finishing 16th. Choi has already won once this season back at the Sony Open, but it is going to take some great play if he wants to beat any of the favorites at the final major of the season.
Long Shot: Angel Cabrera +3500
We like Cabrera to finally play well at the PGA Championship, as he has yet to break the top 10 in his career at this event. But you have to like the fact that Cabrera was able to win the US Open last year, and that he knows just what it takes to win an event with this kind of pressure. Cabrera won’t be found on many predictions to do well this weekend, but with these odds he is worth a shot.
