2008 Pocono 500

June 3, 2008

NASCAR sticks to another Sunday showdown on the racetrack, as drivers will be heading Pocono Raceway June 8th in Long Pond, Pennsylvania for the Pocono 500. Last year Jeff Gordon was able take home the checkered flay for his 3rd title here and first since 1997. Even with a win here last year history doesn’t bode well for Gordon, as that there hasn’t been a driver to win back to back since 1986-87, when Tim Richmond pulled off the feat. Many drivers should be pretty familiar with the triangular racetrack as they spent some time earlier this season testing the Car of Tomorrow here in preparation for the upcoming race. The driver with the best time is NASCAR’s most hated driver and yet the hottest driver Kyle Busch. Busch won last week’s Best Buy 400 for his 3rd win in the last five weeks. Whether that translates to another great showing this weekend, only time will tell. Here is a look at our two drivers we are predicting to do well at the Pocono 500.

#11 Denny Hamlin –6/1 odds at Sportsboook.com

Four of the past five races have been won by the starting row, and two of those came from this guy when he took home both the Pocono 500 and the Pennsylvania 500 in 2006. Hamlin was unfortunate in the crash last weekend at the Best Buy 400 and ended up finishing 43rd. Hamlin didn’t do to bad here on this track last year as he posted a 3rd and 6th finish. Also if the starting spot means so much this guys hasn’t started worse than 6th here at Pocono Raceway. Hamlin is still sitting on one victory that came back in the 6th race of the year at the Goody’s Cool Orange 500. Hamlin is fallen to 9th place in the points and needs to put together another good string of races to get back in the mix, and we think that it will all start this weekend in Pennsylvania.

#48 Jimmie Johnson –8/1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Johnson found himself back in the top 10 last week, as he took home 7th at the Best Buy 400. Back at the very end of March at the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 Johnson started turning his season around with a 4th place finish, and then he went on to get 2nd at the Samsung 500, and followed it up the next week with his only win of the season at the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Johnson won the Pocono 500 back in 2004, and is coming off a 5th place finish in his last race here at Pocono Speedway. Johnson is 7th in the points and needs a good showing if he wants to stay close to points leader Kyle Busch, who is on an absolute tear over the last month or so of racing. Look for Johnson to do well here in the Car of Tomorrow and possibly take home a 1st place finish, or at least a top 3 finish.
