2008 PODS Championship

golf

This week the PGA TOUR will stay in the warm Florida sunshine, as the players make their way to Tampa Bay. Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club’s Copperhead golf course will be hosting the 9th annual event. While the tournament was formally known as the Tamp Bay Classic, then switching to the Chrysler Classic in 2003, this will be the second year the tournament has adopted the new name of the PODS Championship. The ageless Mark Calcavecchia was able to hold on for the victory last year. Copperhead golf course is one of the more challenging courses, as it requires great ball striking if you want to score low. To show just how to if it is, only three players have ever been able to bring in 4 rounds in the 60’s. Last year Calcavecchia opened with a 75, before figuring things out on Saturday’s round when he tied the course record with a 62. So while the fans will have to go another week without Tiger and Phil, they can expect Ernie Els to show up and look for his second win in a row, as he was able to take home the Honda Classic last weekend. Like always we will take a look at three golfers, one is a favorite, one in the middle of the pack, and a long shot that might surprise people this week.

Favorite: Ernie Els 8-1 at BetUS

Last week we were able to successfully predict a victory from Els, as he was able to beat a week field and take home the trophy. This week is much of the same; there just aren’t many others of golf’s greats taking part in the PODS Championship. Els should be able to perform well this week if he wants to win back-to-back weeks for the first time since 2003. If Ernie is unable to keep his drives in the fairway, it could end up being a long week for the South African.

Middle of the Pack: Robert Allenby 25-1 at BetUS

Robert Allenby has started the year off strong so far as he has finished in the top 25 in all of the events he has played besides the Accenture Match Play Championship. His best finish came last week at the Honda Classic, where he finished tied for 4th just three shots back of Els. What makes Allenby so good this week is that he is one of the more accurate golfers in the game. He is currently ranked 10th in total driving, 15th in greens in regulation, and 12th in scoring average. If Allenby is able to get his putter going or at least keep it from costing him numerous strokes, then he will be a major threat on Sunday to take home the trophy.

Long Shot: J.B. Holmes 40-1 at BetUS

While Holmes is currently sitting 5th in the FedEx Cup standings, for some reason Vegas isn’t giving him much of a chance this week. Holmes has already taken home a victory this year winning the FBR Open, and he also placed in the top 10 at the Northern Trust Open. Holmes is currently sitting at 13th in birdie average and has the 8th best scoring average on the tour. While bogeys are bound to happen this week at Copperhead, the player who is able to bounce back with birdies will have a much better chance of coming out on top. Holmes might not be a sleeper for long so don’t miss out on his great odds this week.
