2008 Preakness Stakes Horses
Written May 16, 2008 by Jack Jones
The Preakness is just a couple days away and we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at each horse that is going to be racing this weekend and their odds found at Bodoglife.com. They say that the safe bet is the favorite coming into the race, and while the favorite does win close to 33% of the time you have to look at the other 67% of the time that they don’t. This year Big Brown was your Kentucky Derby favorite and winner and he will try and repeat that performance this week at Pimlico Racetrack. So lets take a look at each horse and a little background info on how they got to the 2008 Preakness Stakes. Horses are listed by postposition.
Macho Again 25/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
With the first post position Macho Again will hope that experience plays a big role this weekend as he is one of only two horses that have started eight times in his career. He has 3 wins and 2 seconds, and just got his first stakes victory in the Derby Trial at Churchill Downs.
Tres Borrachos 50/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
For those of you who pick this horse, don’t get too excited if he comes out leading from the gates. Since suffering an injury to his maiden he has ran out of gas in each of his last 4 races.
Icabad Crane 40/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This horse needed a tough win at the Federico Tesio Stakes to secure his spot in the Preakness Stakes. He has won three out of the four races he has entered, and his only loss came on an artificial surface, but he will need to greatly improve if he wants to contend with the horses this weekend.
Yankee Bravo 20/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This horse definitely has the potential to be a threat this weekend. After arriving to the U.S. this horse won his first two starts and then followed that up with a 3rd place finish in the Louisiana Derby, but beware this horse showed signs of tiring at the Santa Anita Derby.
Behindatthebar 10/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
He is being given the best odds to take down Big Brown this weekend. We would of seen the two horses go at it in the Kentucky Derby, but his owner and trainer decided it would be best to not race him 3 times in a 5 week span. This horse is ready to go and should have a great run this weekend.
Racecar Rhapsody 50/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This could be the best 50/1 horse on the board this weekend. With excellent closing speed, if this horse is able to stay with the pack and be close enough for a big stretch run he could end up placing.
Big Brown 1/4 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This will be the horse with all the attention this weekend, as almost everyone covering this race is predicting this horse to win. He remains undefeated and if is able to run like he did at the Derby should be able to win this race. With a win here he will move within one race of completing the Triple Crown.
Kentucky Bear 14/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This is an interesting horse to watch this weekend, he only has 3 lifetime starts so it’s hard to really know what to expect from this horse. This horse could likely make or break many bets this weekend. If you want our advice ignore the odds and move on, this horse hasn’t proven anything.
Stevil 50/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
Here is another mild sleeper this weekend as Stevil is another horse with great closing speed. A lot will have to happen for this horse to win or even place, but stranger things have happened at the Preakness.
Riley Tucker 50/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This horse is yet another scary horse that just might stir things up this weekend. Besides being trained by Bill Mott and the fact that he will have Edgar Prado on his back, this horse has done fairly well against some really good competition. In 7 starts he has finished in the top 3 six times.
Giant Moon 40/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This horse started his career off great with 4 straight wins, but hasn’t done so well in the last two, failing to show in both of them. He did seem to improve in his last race, and will be interesting to see what he does this weekend.
Gayego 14/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
If you want to talk revenge then Gayego is your horse. He is the only horse that is making the trip from the Kentucky Derby to race at the Preakness Stakes, and if wasn’t for a poor start this horse might have been a bigger player in the Derby. If you are willing to let his last race slip by he is a real threat as he has 3 first and 2 seconds in his other 5 starts.
Hey Byrn 25/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This horse likely doesn’t have what it takes to beat Big Brown as he got destroyed in the Florida Derby by him, but if it wasn’t for a bad start he might have been able to keep it a little closer. This could end up being a decent play if you are looking for a horse to show this weekend. He does have 4 wins and 2 seconds in 8 starts.
