2008 Preakness Stakes Picks
Written May 16, 2008 by Jack Jones
Its that time of year that we make our Preakness Stakes Picks and give you our up to date picks for this years race. Pimlico racetrack is going to be an exciting place to be this weekend as there is buzz flying around the track that this could very well be the year that we finally see another Triple Crown winner, as Big Brown is a huge favorite to win after his impressive win at the Kentucky Derby. With a field full of many new horses from the Kentucky Derby, as Gayego is the only other horse that will be making the trip this weekend. Not racing in the derby usually means that a horse is either not prepared to race that weekend, or just simply wasn’t good enough to make the field. With that said here are our picks to show this weekend at the Preakness Stakes.
Win: Big Brown 1/4 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
Nothing has changed here with our pick to win the Preakness Stakes. Big Brown looks as though he is leaps and bounds above the rest of the field, and still has some fresh racing legs as he has only raced 4 times. The only thing that had people doubting him at the Kentucky Derby was that they didn’t think that he could handle the distance, and he did so in convincing fashion. This week he goes to Pimlico, which is the shortest of the 3 races in the run for the Triple Crown. Expect a win here unless something crazy like the Barbaro scene takes place this weekend.
Place: Behindatthebar 10/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
We really liked what we saw in this horse in his two races leading up to the Kentucky Derby, after being a late scratch from the field in order to prevent the horse from being over worked, it looks like he will be nice and fresh to show off his talent this weekend. In 5 lifetime starts he has 3 wins and 1 second. This will be the first time he will go against Big Brown and it should be an entertaining battle. We expect the race to be closer than people might think, and if Big Brown slips up at all this should be your 2008 Preakness Stakes winner.
Show: Hey Byrn 25/1 odds to win at Bodoglife.com
This horse has had the challenge of facing Big Brown before, and though it didn’t go so well as he finished fourth in the Florida Derby a good distance behind Big Brown, we really feel like it will be a different story this weekend. Hey Byrn was bumped early in that race and it forced him to spend the rest of the race playing catch up. He does have experience with 8 lifetime starts, 4 going for wins and 2 seconds. While we don’t see the outcome changing on who wins the race, we do feel that Hey Byrn will be in it till the end and finish much closer to Big Brown at the Preakness Stakes.
So there you have it the 3 horses we will be putting our money on this weekend at no cost to you.
