2008 San Diego Chargers
Written August 9, 2008 by Jason Lowry
Another exciting NFL season is about to get underway, and Jason Lowry is ready to bring you his 2008 San Diego Chargers season predictions. The Chargers started off the season pretty slow by their standards going just 4-4, but wound up going 11-5, finishing the regular season up with 6 straight wins. The Chargers kept that momentum going in the playoffs as they took care of business against the Titans and Colts before falling to New England in the AFC Championship game. This year the Chargers bring back many of the starters, and to get a good idea at just what they will look like, lets take a closer look at who they will be sending to the field to start the season.
Offense:
Beware NFL teams we feel that LaDainian Tomlinson is going to run wild on everyone this season, as we think he has a pretty big chip on his shoulder after all the crap he took in the AFC Championship game when he was unable to go with a knee injury. Just incase LT isn’t able to return to his amazing form, they still are pretty set with the quarterback receiver duo of Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates. Joining Gates at the receiving positions are Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson. Chambers really was a nice addition via trade in the middle of the season, and could be ready for a big season now that he has had time to work his timing out with Rivers. The offensive line remains big and solid, as they continue to help produce one of the best run and passing teams in the league. There are some concerns with center Nick Hardwick missing some time early in the season, and the play of left tackle Marcus McNeil, who didn’t look as sharp last season.

Defense:
With all the great talent on the offensive side of things, its hard to imagine that the Chargers defense is one of the best in the league, as they are solid all over the field. Up front the Chargers really don’t have a real big name player, other than end Luis Castillo, who could become star before its all said and done. Where this team is loaded is at linebacker, as there might not be to many better than Shawne Merriman. Teaming up with Merriman is Shaun Phillips who is no slouch himself. The teams will have to do without leading tackler Stephen Cooper, as he is suspending for the first 4 games. But don’t worry to much Chargers fans, as the team brought in Derek Smith to fill in at the open spot. The secondary might of even got better with the addition of Antoine Cason from the draft. Last season Antonio Cromartie emerged as a star leading the league with 10 interceptions, and the team loves what they have in safeties Clinton Hart and Eric Weddle. Overall this unit is going to be a force, and has the ability to win games if the offense isn’t up to par.

Special Teams:
Things don’t look too bad here either, as the Chargers have some real solid talent in punter Mike Scifres and kicker Nate Kaeding. Both could have an even better year in 2008. The return game is in good hands with the explosive Darren Sproles who showed just how good he is when he took back to returns for touchdowns in the same game last season.

Prediction: 1st in the AFC West
There is no question that this team is the class of the AFC West, as they went 5-1 in the West . This year will be no different, and we aren’t so sure that this team won’t be even better this season. We are thinking a 12 win season is easily in store for the Chargers this year, and don’t be shocked to see this team back in the AFC Title game.
