2008 San Francisco 49ers

Written August 14, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Its time to get ready for the upcoming NFL season, and Jason Lowry is ready to help you do so with his 2008 San Francisco 49ers season predictions. The 49ers are coming off a pretty down season going just 5-11, but it was good enough for 3rd in the NFC West. This year the 49ers are hoping that the addition of Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator will add some much needed life to the offense. They have also added some solid pieces in Martz’s former player Isaac Bruce from the Rams and Bryant Johnson from the Cardinals. To see just what the 49ers will look like this season, lets take a closer look at just who they will be sending to the field this season.

Offense:
If Martz is able to work some magic with this offense he is first going to have find out who his starting quarterback is going to be. It looks like Alex Smith could get first crack at it, but Shaun Hill and J.T. Sullivan might have something to say about that before preseason is done. The running game still features the very solid Frank Gore, who is coming off his 3rd straight 1,000 yard season, but the 49ers are trying to help him out by adding DeShaun Foster to help take some of the carries. The 49ers receivers could put up some real big numbers this season, and that could mean breakout years for Arnaz Battle and tight end vernon Davis. The offensive line does bring up some concerns as they are hoping Joe Staley can transform into a solid left tackle, and the inside is a little shaky with guards Adam Snyder and rookie Chilo Rachal. Its still up in the air on this unit, but its hard telling until the games get underway.

Defense:
The defense could really come on and be a force this season, and it all starts up front with the addition of Justin Smith from the Bengals and rookie defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer. At linebacker the 49ers have some two of the best young talents in the game in Manny Lawson and Patrick Willis, but there are still some concerns on the play of Dontarrious Thomas and Tuly Banta-Cain. In the secondary the 49ers are pretty well off with the corner duo of Nate Clements and Walt Harris. If there are any questions with this unit it comes in the play of safeties Mark Roman and Keith Lewis. Overall the play of Willis and Lawson could be good enough to carry this unit to a very good season.

Special Teams:
This unit was one of the best in all of the NFL last season, and that mainly comes down to the fact that kicker Joe Nedney and punter Andy Lee are arguably two of the best at their positions. The return game looks to take boost with the addition of Allen Rossum, who showed off his skills returning a kick against the 49ers as a Steeler last season.

Prediction: 3rd in the NFC South
It was really hard picking this team to finish 3rd again, as we really feel like they are doing a great job putting the pieces together. We just can’t rely on a guy like Martz to change everything, after the little success he had as the Lions Offensive Coordinator. We think this team might still be a year away, so we will say a 7-9 season might be just right for this team.
