2008 Seattle Seahawks

Written August 14, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Its just about that time for another great NFL season, and Jason Lowry is ready to bring you his 2008 Seattle Seahawks season predictions. The Seahawks put together a pretty solid season last year going 10-6, good enough for first place in the NFC West. With head coach Mike Holmgren saying that this one is his last, there is some added excitement to the upcoming season, as many want to send him out with a bang. The Seahawks have done ways with former MVP Shaun Alexander, and it will be up to the additions of running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett to get the running game going again this season. To see just what all the Seahawks have done to make 2008, better than 2007, lets take a closer look at what they will look like on all sides of the ball this season.

Offense:
There is talk that quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is primed for another big season in 2008, even though he really doesn’t have much to throw the ball to. The leading go to guy in the receiving game is easily Nate Burleson, who has the explosiveness to be a big time player this season. Also, get ready to see rookie tight end John Carlson in action right away to start the season. The running game should be greatly improved with Duckett and Jones, we are thinking Jones is going to easily stomp his 1 touchdown performance last year with the Jets. The offensive line has its up and downs, on the outside they look pretty set with one of the best left tackles in the game in Walter Jones and Sean Locklear is above average on the right side. The middle 3 is where this team will have trouble, and they are hoping that they can get more consistent play out of center Chris Spencer and newly acquired gaurd Mike Wahle. Overall don’t be shocked if this team puts up bigger numbers than a year ago.

Defense:
Where this team really excels is on defense, as they have an all around great defense. It all starts up front on the defensive line with ends Darryl Tapp and Patrick Kerney. There is a little concern with the attitudes of the tackles as Brandon Mebane and Rocky Bernard can be head cases at times. At linebacker the team looks really good especially with Lofa Tatupu in the middle. Both Julian Peterson and Leroy Hill are great on the outside and can put needed pressure on the quarterback. The secondary is no let down here as they feel they have two very good corners in Marcus Trufant and Kelly Jennings. At safety the team is going send the emerging Brian Russell and Deon Grant to the field to make sure the team doesn’t get beat deep.

Special Teams:
This unit could really struggle without Josh Brown doing the kicking, as they are still unsure if the kicking game will be handled by either Olindo Mare or rookie Brandon Coutu. Punter Ryan Placemeier did a pretty solid job in pinning teams deep, but his net wasn’t where the team would like it to be. The Seahawks do have one of the best punt and kick returners in the game in Burleson, though we might see more of rookie Justin Forsett to keep Burleson more fresh.

Prediction: 1st in NFC West
We are sticking with the Seahawks to take another division title home in 2008, and though we don’t know if this team is good enough to compete with the likes of the Cowboys, Saints, and Vikings, this team has what it takes to compete against any team in the league. We are thinking another 10-6 season sounds just about right.
