The PGA TOUR is making its final stop before the Masters at the Shell Open in Humble, Texas at Redstone GC Tournament Course. There is a pretty strong field lined up to take aim at a 6.5 million purse, and one final shot to get everything geared up for a run at the Masters. The field will be without some of golf’s greats, as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, and Ernie Els all plan on taking the week off leading up to the first major of the season. While Phil Mickelson, defending champion Adam Scott, and 2006 winner Stuart Appleby, all plan on making the trip to Texas this week. The tournament is set to get under way on Thursday April 3 and finish up on Sunday April 6. Redstone is the 8th longest course on tour this year, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some good scores coming in. Last year Scott with a four round total of -17 under, so there are plenty of chances for making birdies. One hole that will definitely test the golfers this weekend is #18, it was the 8th toughest finishing hole last year, and will see many more pars and bogies than it will birdies. So lets take a look at who we think will come in firing low scores at this year’s Shell Houston Open.Favorite: Adam Scott 12-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

We are going with the defending champion over overall favorite Phil Mickelson here. Scott is really focusing in this week, as he is really gearing up for a good showing at the Masters. While Scott has many wins on tour, he has yet to take home the trophy at one of the 4 major events. Scott has only played in 3 PGA TOUR events this season, but has locked away 3 top 25 finishes. His best finish came at the CA Championship two weeks ago where he tied for ninth place. Scott can hit the ball a ton, but hitting it in the fairway is another story. He currently is ranked 4th in distance, but a terrible 201st in driving accuracy. He makes up for his bad aim with the driver, with good iron play and one of the best putting strokes on tour. This long course should fit right into the hands off Scott, and a shot at back-to-back titles at Redstone.

Next In Line: Stuart Appleby 15-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Appleby is another Australian who we think will perform well here. He also hits the ball with the best of them, but struggles with his accuracy. Like Scott he makes up for it with a great short game, as he is currently 14th in putting average. Appleby has had a lot of success here at the Shell Houston Open, as he won the tournament 2 years ago, and finished second to Scott last year. Appleby has been pretty solid this season with 5 top 10 finishes, with his best coming at the FBR open where he finished tied for 4th. So take his good track record here and expect to see him in contention come Sunday.

Long Shot: Hunter Mahan 30-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

We are going with the opposite theme from the first two guys on our long shot this week, as Mahan is much better at placing the ball in the fairway then hitting it a mile. Mahan is pretty solid from tee to green as he also ranks pretty high in greens in regulation. Where Mahan struggles is on the green, where he ranks 132nd. Mahan like anyone else can have a great week on the greens, and put himself right in the middle of things. Look for the Mahan that finished tied for 5th at the Mercedes-Benz Championship and tied for 6th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this weekend.
