2008 South Florida Bulls

Written July 14, 2008 by Jason Lowry

We are nearing the start of another exciting football season, and Jason Lowry is here to get you going with his 2008 South Florida Bulls season predictions. The Bulls were a solid 9-3 in the regular season, but suffered a bad defeat at the hands of Oregon in the Sun Bowl. This year the Bulls return 17 starters and head coach Jim Leavitt is ready to take this team to their 4th straight bowl game. The Bulls only real loss come at the corner spot, where they saw both of last years starters taken in the NFL draft. To get a good idea at who they plan to fill in at corner and any other opens spot, we are going to take a closer look at who they will be sending on the field in 2008.

Offense:
The team brings back 10 starters on offense, and this unit should be able to put up points with any team in the Big East. The Bulls will have starting quarterback Matt Grothe back for his junior season, and he will be throwing to some of the best receivers the Big East has to offer in sophomore Carlton Mitchell and junior Jessie Hester, and thats not even mentioning senior Taurus Johnson and senior tight end Cedric Hill. At the running back position the team will be looking at sophomore Mike Ford to improve on his 645 yard and 12 touchdown season as a freshman. The team needs just one new face on the offensive line, and it looks like the starting spot will go to senior Matt Huners at the right tackle spot. The line should be pretty solid as a whole, as they have one of the best guard combos in the conference in senior Ryan Schmidt and sophomore Zach Hermann.

Defense:
The defense is set to bring back 7 starters from last season, and it starts with the team returning 3 of its 4 starters on the defensive line, that includes star junior defensive end George Selvie, and solid players in senior Jarriett Buie and junior Aaron Harris. Sophomore Terrell McClain likely has the edge at the other starting tackle spot. The Bulls are pretty stacked at the linebacker spot as they have 2 starters coming back in seniors Brouce Mompremier and Tyrone McKenzie, but new starter Kion Wilson could wind up being the best of the bunch. Like we said the team needs two revamp the secondary at the corner spot, and it looks like senior Tyller Roberts will team up with junior Jerome Murphy to take care of the void. The team also needs strong play from returning starters at safety in senior Carlton Williams and junior Nate Allen.

Prediction: 1st in the Big East
We really think that the Bulls have what it takes to be the 2008 winners of the Big East, and play in a BCS bowl game for the first time in school history. The Bulls have plenty of talent on the offense side of things, and they have a defense that is ready to stop the run that so many Big East teams rely on.
