2008 Stanford St Jude Championship

June 2, 2008

With just one more weekend of action before the US Open, it’s time to make our 2008 Stanford St. Jude Championship predictions. With many of the top names taking the week off in order to get fully prepared for the Open, there are a few big names such as Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia set to take action on TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. Defending champion Woody Austin will also be in the field this weekend, as he will look to make his first big splash this season. After an impressive 2007 that included a win here and two 2nd place finishes, he has yet to find the top 3 and only finished in the top 10 twice. This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the event and the 20th time it will have been played at Southwind. Lets take a look at our weekly trio of golfers that we feel have the best shot at being in contention come the final round on Sunday. Last week we were right on when we picked Kenny Perry in the Middle of the Pack as he came away on top of the Memorial Tournament, and our long shot Carl Pettersson came away tied for 10th

Favorite: Sergio Garcia –15-1 at Sportsbook.com

We were right on when we picked Garcia to win the Players Championship as a long shot, and this time we feel that he is going to be a big threat as a favorite. While most of his attention will be on getting his game where it needs to be for the US Open, he is still going to be there to win the tournament this weekend. Garcia remains one of the best at getting to the green in regulation, as he comes in 10th this weekend. He is also 24th in total driving, which means if he can just drop a fair share of putts this weekend he should be right in the mix of things come Sunday afternoon.

Middle of the Pack: Padraig Harrington - 25-1 at Sportsbook.com

While Harrington does the majority of his damage on the European Tour, he has had some success in the states before. He already has 3 top 5 finishes this season on the PGA Tour including a 5th place finish at the Masters. Though he has only played in 7 events on the PGA Tour he ranks 2nd in putting average and 1st in birdie average. If he can find the green in regulation and give himself some good birdie opportunities there is no question that he will be in the mix of things this weekend.

Long Shot: Woody Austin – 50-1 at Sportsbook.com

Woody has played some good golf this season, but has really struggled to put four solid rounds together. He has been in contention at many tournaments before one bad round sends him towards the back of the pack. Austin should have some added confidence this weekend as he has played well here before. Austin does have a 4th place finish at the Zurich Classic and a 5th place finish at the Accenture Match Play Championship this season, and we expect him get his swing back just in time for the US Open this weekend.
