2008 Sun Belt Conference Football

July 25, 2008

Professional handicapper Jason Lowry is ready to bring you his 2008 Sun Belt Conference football predictions, as we sit right on the edge of another exciting NCAA football season. While the Sun Belt Conference isn’t your typical powerhouse football conference, it does bring some tough and quality games during conference play. Last year Florida Atlantic and Troy both finished the season at 6-1 in conference play, but Florida Atlantic won the tie breaker thanks to a tough win on the road at Troy. To get a good idea at what the conference should look like this year, lets take a look at our take on the upcoming season.

1) Florida Atlantic Owls
This was a pretty easy one as the Owls were just 3 points from a perfect season in conference play, and this year they bring back 18 of those starters for another run at a conference title. We look for junior quarterback Rusty Smith to increase his outstanding numbers from last year, and run away with the conference MVP.

2) ULM Warhawks
We might have the Warhawks a little higher than others, but we are pretty sold that this team is ready to make a run at the conference title. They got 15 starters coming back, and they have the talent to beat the top teams, as they showed last year when they took down Florida Atlantic on the road. We look for the Warhawks to not only compete in the Sun Belt, but could be looking at their first bowl game appearance ever.

3) Troy Trojans
The Trojans are another very solid football team in the Sun Belt, and with 14 starters coming back from a team that was near the top last year, we couldn’t see any reason why this team won’t be up there again this year. The Trojans must count on sophomore quarterback Jamie Hampton to step in and not miss a beat with the offense.

4) Arkansas State Red Wolves
The Red Wolves were just 3-4 in conference play a year ago, and really don’t have much coming back with just 11 starters on the field from last year, but we think the defense will be tough and head coach Steve Roberts should get his new guys ready to go by the time conference games roll around.

5) Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns
The Ragin’ Caguns are pretty set on offense with 8 starters coming back, and they have one of the best guys in the backfield in senior Tyrell Fenroy who rushed for over a 1,000 yards last season, and thats not even counting the 1,000 yards quarterback Michael Desormeaux put up. The defense will slow this team down, but they are good enough to compete in every game.

6) North Texas Mean Green
We like the Mean Green to step out of its so called funk and start winning some more football games in 2008. This is a team that went to 4 straight bowl games from 2001 to 2004, and we think they are just a year or two away from being back near the top. A lot rides on freshman quarterback Riley Dodge to be the guy who takes them there.

7) Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
While the Blue Raiders did finish above .500 in conference play going 4-3 last year, we think that there are going to be a few more struggles for this years team. With only 12 starters coming back we see too many concerns on both the offense and defensive lines for the Blue Raiders to really compete this season.

8) Florida International Golden Panthers
We got the Golden Panthers rounding out our Sun Belt Conference standings, as these guys finished dead last for the 2nd straight season last year going just 1-6 in conference play. Even with an outstanding 18 starters coming back, it just won’t be enough to dig this team out of the dumps.
