2008 Super Bowl MVP Predictions
The Super Bowl itself is the ultimate goal for every NFL team when the season begins. Every player dreams of getting the chance of playing on that one special Sunday when everyone gathers around to see who will walk away as Super Bowl Champions. The players who are lucky enough to get the chance to compete in this game have the opportunity to make or break their career. The one player who makes the biggest impact on the game is crowned the most valuable player. This award shows that this player was able to perform on the highest of stages at the highest of levels. While the offense usually dominates this award there have been few defense players to win, with the most recent being Dexter Jackson in Super Bowl XXXVII. The Patriots are loaded at offense and if they win they award is most likely to go to one of the stars. The Giants probably have the best chance of seeing a defense player when the award with one of their great pass rushers, but it is still very unlikely. Lets take a look at 5 players who have a good chance of winning, and who we think will come away as the MVP of Super Bowl XLII.
Tom Brady 1/2
A 2-time winner of the award already, is the odds on favorite to win if the Patriots are able to avoid being upset. He has all the tools around him to take home the honors. With the Pats geared to score their fair share of points, and every play starting with Brady touching the ball, it will be hard for any other player to take the trophy from him.
Patriot Receiver: Moss 4/1 Welker 5/1
We are mainly talking about Randy Moss and Wes Welker here, if one of these two is able to go over a 100 yards and reach the end zone, their chances of winning will greatly increase. The main concern with picking one of these guys is that they may take votes away from each other, and if Brady doesn’t throw any interceptions he will be hard to beat.
Laurence Maroney 5/1
Maroney has been the man for the Patriots this post-season, rushing for 122-yards and a touchdown in both games. If the Patriots decide to keep the ball on the ground, and Brady is unable to play like he has in the past, Maroney should be the favorite to win.
Eli Manning 7/2
Eli has played as though he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league as of late. While his numbers haven’t been that impressive, his decision-making has been magnificent. With a Giants win and a solid game by Manning we could see the trophy staying in the Manning family, as brother Peyton won the award last year.
Plaxico Burress 8/1
Burress’s stock rose greatly after his great performance in the Conference Championships against the Green Bay Packers. Burress was not only making amazing catches while torching the Packer secondary he did most of his damage against all-pro corner Al Harris. Burress is also a great threat in the end zone with his great ability to go up over the defender and get the football. Even if the Giants don’t come out on top look for Burress to have a big day.
Our pick: Wes Welker 5/1
We are going out on a limb here and taking Wes Welker to win the award. Welker sees the majority of the passes come his way, and he burned the Giants in the last game of the season for 11 catches and 122-yards. While he didn’t get in the end zone we think that will change as we see him going for 150+ and 2 touchdowns. While Brady is the safe pick we aren’t sold on him being 100%. His sore ankle will keep him from going deep to Moss and instead hitting Welker on short passes and letting him do work after the catch.
