2008 Texas A&M Aggies
Written June 27, 2008 by Jason Lowry
There is plenty to get excited about, with only a couple months left till college football Jason Lowry is ready to make his 2008 Texas A&M Aggies football predictions. The Aggies are fresh off a 7-6 season and were 4-4 in the Big 12, but suffered a disappointing loss to Penn State in the Alamo Bowl. The Aggies will be in their first season with new head coach Mike Sherman, who will have a lot of work cut out for him with only 10 returning starters from last season. With the Big 12 looking like its going to be pretty tough yet again, the Aggies have their work cut out for them if they are hoping to repeat their success from a year ago. Lets take a look at what they will be bringing to both sides of the ball, and we will give you our thoughts on where they will end up at the end of the Big 12 season.
Offense:
Only 5 returning starters on this side of the ball, which could mean trouble for a unit that wasn’t all that impressive. The team should be glad to at least have some stability at the quarterback spot in senior Stephen McGee who can not only throw the football, he racked up 899 yards on the ground as well. The team also brings back their starting running back in junior Mike Goodson who had 5 touchdowns and 711 yards on the ground last season, and thats not mentioning senior Jorvorskie Lane who had 16 touchdowns and 780 yards on the ground. The Aggies look like they got the best 1-2 punch in the conference with these guys. The team doesn’t have much experience coming back at wide receiver as they return senior Pierre Brown, but he had just over 200 yards receiving and zero touchdowns last year. The team hopes they can get some production out of freshman receiver Jeffrey Fuller and junior tight end Jamie McCoy. Where the offense is going to struggle is the line, where they return only one starter and really don’t have any big talents at any of the positions.
Defense:
The defense was pretty solid last season, but with only 5 returning starters on this side as well things are likely to get worse here. The Aggies only bring 1 starter back on the defensive line in senior Cyril Obiozor who had 3.5 sacks a year ago. It looks like fellow senior Michael Bennett will take over the other end spot, while sophomore Lucas Patterson and junior Kellen Heard take over the starting roles at tackle. The team will be starting 3 new faces at linebacker, both junior Matt Featherston and sophomore Von Miller have seen action before, but redshirt freshman Garrick Williams will be your new starting strong side linebacker as of now. Things do look much brighter in the secondary, as they return all 4 starters from last year. This unit will have to carry this team, and it will all start junior corner back Jordan Pugh who is the teams leading returning tackler from last season with 90.
Prediction: 6th in the Big 12 South
Someone has to finish last and with only 10 starters coming back the Aggies are our prime target to do so. We love the talent this team has at running back, but we are unsure if the offensive line is going to provide any holes. If the defense looked better than we might have them a little higher, but we aren’t sure the front 7 will be able to stop anyone with only 1 returning starter. A lot will have to happen for me to be wrong, but you never know what to expect in college football.
