2008 US Open Odds
Written June 4, 2008 by Jason Lowry
The 108th US Open is set to get underway Thursday June 12th at Torrey Pines in California, and it will be the 2nd go around for many golfers at the course as it is the same course that held the Buick Invitational earlier this season. While the Buick Inv. splits the first 36 holes between the North and South courses, the US Open will only be played on the much more difficult South course. The US Open is the 2nd major of the year and its been almost 2 months since the last one, where Trevor Immelman was able to hold off Tiger Woods for the Masters Championship. Here is a look at the top 5 players odds to win the US Open. You can also check out the rest of the fields odds to win at the end of the article.
Tiger Woods –7/4 at Sportsbook.com
While there is a lot to like here, as there is no question that Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the world right now, it will be very interesting to see how he responds to the first tournament play after a 2 month layoff from knee surgery. With Woods past success at Torrey Pines there is no wonder this guy is the man to beat at the US Open.
Phil Mickelson –7/1 at Sportsbook.com
Mickelson also has a pretty decent past at Torrey Pines as he has two career victories on the course. Mickelson finished tied for 5th a the Masters and just picked up his second win of the season at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. While Mickelson has yet to win the US Open he does have four 2nd place finishes, but is coming off last year where he failed to even make the cut.
Sergio Garcia – 15 -1 at Sportsbook.com
Garcia looked to have maybe found his game once again as he took home the Players Championship this season. Garcia best finish at the US Open was a tie for 3rd in 2005, ad he is still looking for that first major championship of his career. Garcia didn’t play at the Buick Inv. so this will be his first action at Torrey Pines this season.
Jim Furyk – 20/1 at Sportsbook.com
Even though Furyk hasn’t had a great season this year, he always seems to kick it in gear right around the US Open. After winning the tournament back in 2003, Furyk just missed another as he finished tied for 2nd in both of the last two years. Don’t be surprised to see this guy in the hunt on Sunday.
Vijay Singh, Adam Scott, Padraig Harrington, and Retief Goosen – 25/1 at Sportsbook.com
After Furyk things begin to bunch up as the odds makers don’t see to much in the rest of the field to give them great odds. But for a better this is good because you get some big names at a pretty good price, as we wouldn’t be surprised to see any of these 4 walk away the US Open Champion this weekend. Singh has finish tied for 6th two out of the last 3 years, Scott has yet to play well at all at the US Open, Harrington is your defending British Open Champion and finished 5th at the US Open in 2006, and Goosen just might be the best bet out of the group, as he has won the US Open twice(2001, 2004).
