2008 US Open
June 4, 2008
With just over a week remaining and many of the players still yet to tee off at the Stanford St. Jude Championship this weekend, it’s time for Jason Lowry’s 2008 US Open preview and prediction for one of the most historic golfing events of our time. Unlike the Masters the US Open is played on a different course each year, and this year Torrey Pines in San Diego, CA will be the host of the 2nd major of the year. The US Open takes pride in making golfers play their best in order to come away victorious. They are usually very long with tight fairways and some of the toughest greens players will see throughout their career.
Golf fans should be happy to know that Tiger Woods will be back in action this weekend, and it will be interesting to see how he comes back after not playing since his 2nd place finish at the Masters. Winning a major is many times the deciding factor in a successful golfers career, and many times winning one isn’t enough. After all the talk of Tiger Woods and his chances at winning the Grand Slam of golf this year, the only golfer with a shot to do that is Masters Champion Trevor Immelman. Whatever he had at the Masters he looks to have lost it, as he missed the cut in his next two tournaments and his best finish came last week when he tied for 30th at the Memorial Tournament. Here are the 3 golfers we think will have the best shot at being in contention come the final round at the 108th US Open.
Favorite: Tiger Woods – 7/4 odds at Sportsbook.com
There is no way we are picking against this guy, even if he hasn’t played in almost two months. Woods has absolutely dominated Torrey Pines in his career where he has won 6 times at the Buick Invitational, including 4 straight and an 8 shot win this year to start the season. Woods knows how to handle the pressure of these majors unlike any other golfer on tour today, and he will be making his bid for his 14th major win of his career and his continued quest to catch Jack Nicklaus for the all-time lead. He will be looking to win his 3rd US Open and first since 2002 when he won at Bethpage. While the Masters shown that anybody can win a major, it’s the safest pick in the book to go with this guy.
Middle of the Pack: Adam Scott – 25/1 odds at Sportsbook.com
We are going with the Australian to bring his game to the US Open this year. Scott has the talent to be one of the best golfers in the world, but he is still lacking that 1st major championship of his career. So far this season Scott has been pretty solid as he has a win on the PGA TOUR at the Byron Nelson Classic and a win on the European Tour at the Qatar Masters. Scott doesn’t to good a history at the US Open, but we really think this will be the tournament that gets him going.
Long Shot: Rory Sabbatini – 80/1 odds at Sportsbook.com
While it’s hard to find a solid long shot, we think we have found a guy that should be a threat this weekend. If Sabbatini can bring the game he had back at the Buick Invitational to start the season, then here is a good chance he will be right in the thick of things. Sabbatini finished tied for 2nd at the event and with the play at US Open on that very same course; it makes him the best-valued long shot on the board.
