2008 Verizon Heritage Odds & Predictions

Its hard to believe that in just a matter of days the PGA Tour will be back at again, when the tour heads to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for the Verizon Heritage tournament at Harbour Town Golf Links. While some of the big names such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Vijay Singh will be taking the week off there is still a strong field set to do battle this weekend. Masters Champion Trevor Immelman will also be taking off this week, leaving Bernhard Langer as the last man to win the Masters and follow it up with a victory here at Harbour Town, when he did so back in 1985. Defending champion Boo Weekly will be in the field and ready to defend his title after taking home the victory last year with a chip in on the final hole for a par and a one shot victory over Ernie Els. Here is a look at three golfers we feel have what it takes to shake off a long week at Augusta and take home a victory this week at the Verizon Heritage.

Favorite: Stewart Cink 15-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Cink is a two time champion here at Harbour Town, and is coming off a pretty impressive showing at the Masters last week, where he came in tied for 3rd. That’s not all for this guy as he has been pretty impressive all year long. He has finished 2nd twice this season. One coming at the Accenture Match Play Championship, and the other at the PODS Championship. He also has another top 5 finish at the Buick Invitational, where he finished tied for 3rd. Cink has been great in greens in regulation where he comes in wit the 7th best percentage on tour, and currently sits 11th in scoring average. So with Cink’s great history here, and his overall great play this year, he is a lock to be in contention come Sunday.

Middle of the Pack: Brandt Snedeker 30-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Snedeker was all but primed for a Masters run last weekend when he came out with a eagle on the 2nd hole of the final round and put himself in a tie for first with Immelman. Snedeker then proceeded to join everyone else and blew up on the rest of his round and wound up shooting a five over 77 and finishing tied for 3rd with Cink. We believe that Snedeker will be able to bounce back and relax a little this week. Snedeker is worth the risk this week, and with these kinds of odds it’s hard to not put a little action on this guy.

Long Shot: Woody Austin 50-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

This is definitely a long shot here as Austin failed to even make the cut last week at the Masters. The extra two days off could wind up helping him as he had some time to reevaluate his game and get it ready for a run this weekend. Austin has had success here at Harbour Town, and like Cink, comes in with a top ten average in greens in regulation. What has killed Austin this year has been his putting as he ranks 131st in putts per round, but if anybody can have a good week and we are expecting the putter to heat up this weekend.
