2008 Wachovia Championship Odds & Predictions

The PGA TOUR is heading out of the state of Texas and moving east to Charlotte, N.C. for the Wachovia Championship. The tournament is scheduled to get underway Thursday May 1st and finish on Sunday May 4th. The Wachovia Championship is the last for many of the players to get tuned up for the much anticipated Players Championship. This tournament is nothing to look past; as it’s strong field (19 out of the top 25 players this year) and possible Master’s like conditions makes it one of the better tournaments of the year. The tournament will be played at Quail Hollow Club, where last year Tiger Woods was able take home the trophy. This will mark the 6th time this tournament will have played on this course, as it began to play here back in 2003. The tour officials are hoping to make this golf course a faster track, which will make this course play much like Augusta National of the Masters. Here is a favorite, a middle of the pack, and a long shot to do well this week at the Wachovia Championship.

Favorite: Vijay Singh 15/1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Even with a field that has last weeks winner of the EDS Byron Nelson Classic and heavy favorite Phil Mickelson scheduled to play, we are going with Vijay Singh as our guy to beat this week. Vijay has been pretty solid all season long, and played pretty consistent at the Masters. He just couldn’t get a big round in and ended up finishing tied for 14th. With four top 5 finishes this year, and no victories, means this guy is due to actually win one this year. Take Vijay as your big favorite this week.

Middle of the Pack: Trevor Immelman 40/1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Here we are actually going a little higher than we normally do, but the thing is we found two guys that we really like to do well this weekend. Immelman is your defending Masters Champion and while it seems more like a risk for him just to make the cut, we have a scary feeling that this guy is going to have another big week this week. With the course set up to play like the Masters, we don’t see how you go against the guy that did it best this year. On top of that Immelman has performed well here before, as he was the runner-up to Jim Furyk in 2006. Immelman could be a big winner at 40/1 if he is able to come through.

Long Shot: Rory Sabbatini 60/1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Sabbatini has been on and off this year, but still has put together a 2nd and 3rd place finish this season. We think that Sabbatini will make a big bounce back this weekend after two straight missed cuts. Sabbatini is no stranger to Quail Hollow as he was able to finished tied for 3rd here last year. Sabbatini is definitely a long shot, but we like his chances this weekend to finish up at least in contention when the final round gets underway. And when you got a chance on Sunday, you never know what can happen.
