2008 Wake Forest Demon Deacons
July 11, 2008
To get fans going for the upcoming NCAA football season, Jason Lowry is going to bring you his 2008 Wake Forest Demon Deacons season predictions. The Deacons are coming off a pretty successful season where they finished 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC Atlantic division. The Deacons finished off the season with an impressive win over Connectitcut in the Meineke Car Care Bowl game. The Demon Deacons do return 14 starters and it hopes that head coach Jim Grobe will be able to get this team to repeat their season performance from a year ago. We are going to take a closer look at what the Deacons will be bringing to both sides of the ball in the upcoming season.
Offense:
This is where the team is going to have most of its trouble, as they only return 5 starters to this unit. Junior quarterback Riley Skinner will have to get better on his accuracy as he threw more interceptions than touchdowns last season. The team does have a pretty solid running back to get things going on the ground as sophomore Josh Adams is back after a 953 yard and 11 touchdown season. The team is going to have to rely on senior Chip Brinkman and fellow senior DJ Boldin in the other starting spot. The offensive line isn’t going to be that impressive as they only return 2 starters in junior Jeff Griffin at the right tackle spot, and junior Barrett McMillin at the right guard spot. As it looks now junior Trey Bailey will take over at center, sophomore Russell Nenon at the left guard spot, and junior Joe Birdsong at the left tackle spot.
Defense:
Here is where the Demon Deacons should be at their best, as they return 9 starters on this side of the ball from a team that struggled at times last season. The team is weakest on the defensive line as both open starting spots come here, and it looks like senior Anthony Davis will take over at one of the end spots, while junior John Russell takes over at the open tackle spot. The team returns all its starters at linebacker and in the secondary meaning that if they can get enough push up front they might be able to shut teams down completely on this side of the ball. Linebacker Aaron Curry and corner Alphonso Smith are two of the best at their positions in the ACC. Not far behind them is linebacker Stanley Arnoux, corner Brandon Ghee, and strong safety Chip Vaughn.
Prediction: 4th in the ACC Atlantic
This team is going to be one of the best on defense, but then its going to struggle on the offensive side of things. If the team is able to get enough of a running game going the defense might be able to get good enough field position for this team to win a lot of games again this season. We think they are right there with Maryland as the 3rd best team in the Atlantic division, but we think Maryland will beat the Deacons at home on Oct 18th.
